I have seen a few references to this, but I don’t see this on my ipad settings after iOS 15, but am having the same issue. I also can click load content, but don’t want to do that on each and every email. Is there an easier option?

Hi again KarenCla,

Wondering if you now have the most recent update on your iPhone, (iOS 15.3) ?

Seems it isn't you, or where you live, that is the security risk ....

Apple wants to protect it's device users from the sender of the e-mail,

who may want to observe /collect / your private data / viewing habits etc.

It is your choice ... you can turn on / off the protection for Apple "Mail" app..

Turned on, Mail Privacy Protection makes it harder for senders to follow your Mail activity

Apple Support's article: "Use Mail Privacy Protection on iPhone"

Says:

"Go to Settings  > Mail > Privacy Protection.

Turn on (or off) Protect Mail Activity."

Complete article: https://support.apple.com/en-au/guide/iphone/iphf084865c7/15.0/ios/15.0

If you are not using the Mail app for your eMail,

and

are using Safari / Outlook / for your Mail

... you might want to check how Outlook handles settings for the loading of images.

All the best :-)

PS:

In this discussion thread on a similar topis

"LotusPilot"

says:

"Whilst not recommended, should you wish to change this protective behaviour and automatically download all content, a simple change can be made in your device settings:

Settings > Mail > Privacy Protection > Block All Remote Content - set to OFF"

OK, a good explanation. There are two ways that images appear in email:

  1. The image is physically attached to the message, with a tag to show where it should appear in the body of the message
  2. The image is NOT attached to the message; instead it is a link to an image on the sender’s server that gets inserted with an HTML “img” tag.

Type 1 images should always appear, and are not a risk, except in the really unusual situation of an image that contains something executable. But iOS and Mac OS (as well as any good Windows antivirus) blocks these.

Type 2 images are a privacy issue, because the request to the server to retrieve and insert the image includes some identifying info on the device requesting and displaying the message. In addition, the image file may contain a customized tag that identifies who the image was sent to, thus telling the sender not only that it was received by an iPhone, but now your iPhone is linked to what the sender already knows about you.

Based on this I have used the feature of my Mac to block all type 2 images, and Apple has recently added this option to iOS. But if you don’t care about anyone sending image links to you collecting data on who you are and what device is yours then you can turn the privacy feature off.

Thanks for your reply, robby1983.

Oops! Apologies for not sending iPhone info.

Grateful to know your issue was solved, anyway.

As well as Privacy settings for Mail, seems iOS15 provides a choice to:

"Load All Images" via a button at the top of an email with unloaded remote content that is received

All the best!.

Nothing is working for me. In iPhone 15, there is no turn on remote content in Mail settings. Turning on the Privacy protection button does not load images in an email in outlook. Turning it off doesn’t work either. There is no button on an opened email in outlook to turn on images. In the body of the email from the sender where the images are blocked is a link that says turn on images to shop. Clicking on this link gives an error symbol that Safari cannot open page. Help! What do I fo to enable remote images to load in my emails? I have iPhone 13 ProMax

Hi jessx03,

Wondering which Mac model you have,

and

which Mac OS you have installed.

Eg: I'm still using macOS Big Sur 11.6.2 on MacBook Pro

and have "load Remote Content" button across the top of open eMails that contain remote content.

as well as the option to "load remote content" in the viewing tab of Mail preferences. (Now turned off for security)

With Mac OS Monterey ... seems Apple may address the issue in future updates,

as "Load remote content": option has been removed from Mail Preferences / viewing tab..

Seems if remote content it always turned on:

there is now a safety concern / vulnerability / eg: from those who misuse mass emails, trackers etc.

Apple is concerned with security / protecting privacy.

All the best :-)

If you see above we already went through those directions. My details show protect mail activity as “off” and it still does not load the emails and requires you to click on “load content” for each and every email. If we are missing something else here, please point us to where. But that toggle does NOT resolve the issue I posted about originally. Thanks
