Apple Music stalls when playing to Airplay via WiFi under Big Sur

When trying to play music from my library, Apple Music “stalls” after playing 3 or 4 songs. Remote apps on iOS devices will display incorrect information about current playback status.

If I play from the same library to either the computer speakers or to a Bluetooth-connected speaker, it works JUST FINE.

Playing via Airplay over WiFi works JUST FINE from my iOS devices.

Okay, I'm loathe to declare victory too soon, but.....

Upgrading to 12.6 appears to have fixed this issue. I'm now 50 songs into streaming from my Mac to this home's HomePod. All good. Thank you, Apple Engineering!

I hope others have similar success to mine...

Airplay 2 on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro 2021 worked fine for me with macOS Monterey. On Ventura it works only after the Music app was recently opened. If the already opened app instead wakes up after hibernation, the connection gets not reestablished and a message appears, that no network connection can be found. At the same time music streaming over wifi network works without problems.

If I close the Music app and open it again, Airplay 2 works just fine.

It's weird.

Hello drengfer,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's our understanding that music stalls when streaming Apple Music audio from your Mac with AirPlay. We're happy to look into this with you.

If you haven't already, try restarting your Mac. Restarting can resolve many unexpected behaviors.

Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

If the issue persists, test in another user account. This will help us identify if the issue is occurring system wide or with a specific user. Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Let us know the results. Does the issue occur when connected to a different Wi-Fi network? Be sure to include any other troubleshooting steps that you may have tried.

Have a nice day!

Okay, here's the latest updates:

  • Updated to Monterey (currently at 12.0.1). Did not resolve the issue.
  • Supplied system logs and a video of the screen behavior to Apple Support.
  • Apple Support passed that along to Engineering. Engineering: "known problem; working to resolve the issue."

So, it's not just my imagination! That said, no commitment or prognosis for a fix (yet).

I have this exact issue since May 2021 (running Big Sur) just on my M1 MacBook (iPhone 12 Pro has no problem Airplaying correctly to these Sonos speakers). No issue with my Sonos setup before that point.

Upgrading to Monterey doesn't help. I've also done a complete wipe and set up fresh in the past 3 weeks and this issue still persists.

Also can confirm 12.2.1 doesn't fix this issue either.

Okay, ran some more test cases:

  • Using Sonos MacOS app to play music from my Apple Music account over networked speakers (Sonos)
    • Works fine
  • Using the MacOS Music app to play videos over networked speakers (via AppleTV)
    • Hangs (in my test case, stalled after playing 2nd video; shows 3rd video in playback window, but nothing playing)
  • Using the MacOS Music app to play videos to a Bluetooth speaker via AirPlay
    • Works fine

So, consistently the Apple Music app fails when playing (music or videos) to networked speakers (Sonos or AppleTV) on my M1 machine.

I'm having a similar issue — as of last week. One of my HomePod mini speakers is continually cutting out when playing Apple Music, both on its own and via the iPhone app via AirPlay. I've rebooted and reset the speaker but the issue persists. It’s at the point of unusable, except … when I connect to the same HomePod Mini speaker with a third part app using AirPlay (KCRW radio, BBC Sounds), it plays as normal. Totally fine.

I'm suspecting a software bug on the Apple Music side?

I've also been fighting this issue when playing from my Macbook. I usually have to go back and play the last few seconds of the two tracks that played but did not update PlayCount or LastPlayed to get those to update and then things work fine UNTIL I pause and then restart where it will happen again. Very annoying!

I'm running Monterey 12.4 now, by the way.

I too have been experiencing the same problem with an M1 Macbook Air for well over a year now. I worked with Apple for a few weeks and then gave-up because it was going nowhere. On the same home network, I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro, which plays an exact copy of the local library without any problems. One more observation I want to add... when I connect my iPhone to my home network and open both the Sonos (and Bang & Olufsen) phone apps while Airplaying from the Apple Music App on the Macbook Air, the number of songs that will play before stalling increases from 3-4 to around 26. Both the Sonos and B&O phone apps reliably track what is currently playing from the M1 Macbook Air. Yes, I am using Airplay to play synchronously to both speaker brands simultaneously.

One more update after continued use on a blustery, rainy day on the West Coast:

. The "test user" account will also stall, though not as quickly or predictably as my main account. May play a few dozen songs before stalling, whereas my main account reliably stalls within 3 or 4 songs.

So, the "new user" solution has ultimately failed; issue appears to be system-wide, not user-specific.
