White screen with question mark folder

About a year ago I replaced the hard drive on my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, and it has been running smoothly ever since. I just made a presentation in Keynote, and converted it into a movie which was around 432mb, and tried to send it through iMessage on my MacBook, big mistake I know…

This made iMessage unresponsive so I turned off my MacBook and restarted but it was stuck on the flashing file folder with a question mark.

I entered recovery mode, but my hard drive is not listed and the only thing available is the Mac OS Base System, so I am unable to run first aid on the actual hard drive.

I tried restoring from backup and also tried installing the original OS, but it doesn’t list the hard drive and only says “searching for disks”.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
