Internet issues on Monterey

Anyone else having Internet issues on macOS Monterey? I installed it last night and this morning I can only stay connected to the Internet for about 5-10 minutes before Safari gives a DNS issue. I've switched from using Google DNS to my ISP one, issue still persists. Flushed the DNS cache, issue still persists. Deleted all known networks, issue still persists.

Rebooting is the only way I can get Internet reconnected which is annoying every 10 minutes! was this OS not tested?????

Well the issue only happened after the Monterey update and only affects the only Mac that’s been updated to Monterey so you can see why I’d think that might be the issue.

As mentioned in my post only rebooting the Mac fixes the issue. Restarting just the browser does nothing. Nor does flushing the DNS cache, swapping to a different network, changing from wired to wireless, changing DNS from Google to ISP or trying a different browser. I can browse the Internet on Safari for about 10 minutes then Safari presents a DNS error that it’s not able to resolve the address. This issue also is present if I use Chrome, Edge or Brave browsers. So I think I’ve tried plenty of things to allow me to “draw the conclusion” that the issue has been caused by Monterey.

Same problem. Have done everything that has been suggested, and it is exactly as you have said, when I restart it works (I initially did in safe mode, then realised it didn't matter, any restart works), but only for a while, doing a Wireless Diagnostic identifies the issue as a DNS issue, have deleted the DNS cache, set up a new network, used different DNSs, removed hide IP, I can manage to fix it by restarting only, which is a major pain. I have updated on Monterey on 2 other machines and it's fine on 2 of the machines (MBP and another iMac), but this iMac simply loses its DNS. Any other answers?

Glad to see it's not only me. The fact that it's not happening to everyone on Monterey is good to know, but only part of the picture. It may still turn out to have another cause other than macOS Monterey, but I think enough evidence has been presented to not confidently dismiss it as having nothing to do with macOS.

I've been using an M1 Mac Mini running Big Sur for at least six months without any network issues. Within the last several days since upgrading to Monterey, I've suddenly had two or three incidents of inability to reach Internet resources due to DNS errors. And these are sites I've used hundreds of times.

After a few hours of trouble-free operations, my default browser (Edge) will suddenly be unable to resolve any DNS names. I then test multiple websites and browsers (Safari and Chrome) and other Internet connected apps—all with the same DNS failures. Following this, I even tried flushing DNS cache and multiple alternative DNS providers all to no avail. The only thing that has instantly resolved the issue for me (at least for quite a few hours) is restarting macOS.

Several others have already chimed in here with the same problem, so it seems worthy of further investigation.

You make a very good point. That would most likely help .The problem, as I see it, is who can compile this information about which models are affected or not. More importantly, I think, would turn out to be how the Macs are loaded with certain apps or whatever. The trick wold be to determine why only certain computer's are being affected. Only Apple could undertake such a project and at this time I see nothing to indicate that this kind of data is being collected. It seems clear to me that these varied issues started when Safari version 15 was released. It is now looking like those issues continue with Safari 15.1 which is part of Monterey.

"The trick [is] to determine why only certain computers are being affected."

Bingo!

I wish this were isolated to Safari. Unfortunately, the problem occurs in other browsers too such as Chrome and Edge. It even impacts my Windows 11 virtual machine running in Parallels which depends on macOS for its network connection. But thanks for contributing to our brainstorming session.

It's not any cleaning/optimising/speed up, antivirus or VPN apps in my case - I have 3 macs with the same software and only 1 out of the 3 had this problem.

Mac 1 - iMac in the home

Mac 2 - iMac at work

Mac 3 - MB Air which goes between work and home and everywhere

Mac 1 and 3 frequently use the work Cisco VPN, Mac 2 rarely uses it because it's plugged into work ethernet. Otherwise they all have the same software, all use mainly Safaria and Firefox but have Chrome installed.

Only Mac 1 had a problem. It's not the home network because Mac 3 had not problem with it. It's not VPN because Mac 3 also uses VPN when I need to access work things.

All 3 machines are working fine for nearly a week now. In addition there are 2 other Macs in the house which have had no problem with the upgrade.

I may have found the cause of this issue (at least on my Mac). Is anyone else having this issue running AdGuard for macOS? It's an excellent ad-blocking, privacy, malware protection layer that I've been using on macOS for 7 months and on Windows and Android for a couple of years now. However, there may be some issues with AdGuard and macOS Monterey. Since disabling AdGuard, I haven't had any DNS or other network issues for more than two days. I'm working with AdGuard support to troubleshoot.

Another important piece of information is that I was using a wired connected to my cable modem. I had forgotten about that. This proves Wi-Fi configuration was definitely not a factor—although I was already confident about that since my network connection was rock solid for 7 months until upgrading to Monterey.

I have also seen this issue. I have a little more info. So initially it looks like a DNS issue, I was seeing DNS lookups fail on WiFi for a few of upgraded users (3 out of 20). I managed to get hold of one of the Macs today and sure enough after a few minutes of use (different network, different building, other Macs working ok) DNS seems to fail for WiFi. So via a Dock I plugged it into the network and it worked. Go back to the WiFi even after switching WiFi off and on, still didn't work. So rebooted the Mac and tried it just on LAN. It had the same problem after a few minutes, switched it over to WiFi and it worked again. So it seems to be per interface rather than the whole I.P. network setup. The only common factor was all the Macs updated to Monterey, not a fresh install. I tried flushing DNS while it had the problem with "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder" but this made no difference. I am really hoping that when 12.1 releases it will fix this issue. The only other thing I am going to try is a bare metal re-install of Monterey on one of the machines that has a problem to see if the problem still happens. The 3 Macs I have seen the issue on are (13" Macbook Pro Intel, 16" Macbook Pro Intel and a 13" Macbook Pro M1)

Things have moved on a bit since I first reported this issue. I have since bought a new MacBook Pro and shockingly the issue has followed onto that Mac even though it was setup as a new Mac didn’t do a TimeMachine restore etc. the other Macs in the house are all working fine. I’ve followed a few suggestions flushing DNS, removing Wi-Fi preference files etc but the only thing that gets the Mac to work on the Internet is a full reboot. Local network traffic is fine, Time Machine backups still work when it’s in this state but anything Internet based fails. I’m now in the process of doing a reinstall of the OS on my new Mac in the hope that fixes it.
