MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.6
The networked (wired/wi-fi) Canon PIXMA MG5420 is supported for print and scan (Image Capture) via Apple's built-in AirPrint drivers. Re/add the device in the System Preferences > Printers & Scanners panel. Either right-click on the device entry and choose Reset printing system… or if not present, click the [ + } symbol to add the device. For a driver, select AirPrint instead of any Canon offering.
After re-adding the device with AirPrint, and you select the MG5420 entry on the preceding preferences panel, is there a separate setup for scanning available to you? In any case, the AirPrint drivers should make this device compatible with Apple's Image Capture scanning software.
If scanning is still unavailable, then the paid, 64-bit VueScan Professional does support the MG5420 scanner without any Canon or Apple software requirement. You can use the free VueScan Professional trial to test the scanning capability.
I purchased VueScan Professional in 2010 for what was then a Canon abandoned scanner. I have never paid any additional money to the VueScan vendor, and use the current version of VueScan on macOS 11.6.1 with this scanner. The vendor does not reward me in any manner for mentioning their product here.

Yes. Even though the printer(s) are roughly 3 years old, Canyon says they no longer support newer drivers.
I suppose I need a generic 64-bit scanner driver- similar to what I've needed for unsupported laser printers in the past. The print drivers continue to function without any issues.
The generic scanner driver is ICA. It is to scanners what AirPrint is to printers.
Vuescan may work, but fairly expensive.
Did you look on Canon’s website?
Did you open Image Capture to see if it has ICA support?
Your solution worked perfectly. Thanks very much.
You are welcome.
