Two Factor Authentication

I lost my phone today and I wanted to use find my iphone on my computer, but it needed to authenticate my computer via my phone to use it. Obviously that wasn't very helpful. I have an older imac so that may be part of the issue, but in case it happens again any suggestions for how to avoid that? Thanks!
