Has anyone tried to install Monterey on a M1 MBP 13" and received the "you must provide auth for this volume by setting it as install disk"? The internal drive IS the start-up disk. No other disks are present, the internal drive shows as the start-up drive... I'm stumped.

Appears I can now install Monterey in Recovery-mode (vs in the desktop of BigSur as implied by the download and install button).
I feel like Apple could do a better job of including these critical tidbits of info. up front. For a platform that is supposed to be ease-of-use friendly this reminds me of installing Windows drivers. Nothing like 1-2 steps being left out and for the user to discover.
Anyway, seems to be installing now via recovery mode. Thanks for your assist.

I just saw the same on an M1 iMAC. For me the answer was to run the upgrade as an Admin user, not my default (non-admin) account.
That might be easier than recovery mode.
If you want that as the Startup Disk, I recommend you follow the directions. Macs with T2 chip or Apple-Silicon M1 (all flavors) use enhanced security settings from Startup Security Utility to protect you:

Login with Admin access/type user and continue installation.
That is a complication of the way MacOS installs itself.
Files can be pre-placed, but the actual installation of any Major version is always done using a striped-down instance of the incoming Major version.
That is why there was always a Restart part way through, and with the added complexity of Startup Security, it gets a little messy.
Great call-out. I did not try this as previously the installer asked for an admin account if it was required, before proceeding.
In this case I was just left with a somewhat cryptic message about start-up disk.
Now that I think about it, I believe this is the first major M1 OS upgrade so this may be the way it goes from here on out. Will try to login from an admin account next time before going the recovery route.

This worked for me too.
After getting the “startup disk” message twice (in my non admin account), the update worked as expected from the admin account.
A tip of my hat to all of us running our Macs “properly”, and a wag of the finger to Apple ;)
