Cannot import from scanner via WiFi

When I try to import from my Hp printer/scanner in Preview, I receive the message "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)"

This may or may not apply to you - I have my computer hardwired on one subnet with the printer (Brother) on wifi on another subnet. They are connected through a firewall (just routing, not filtering in this case). Though the scanner showed up in the printer/scanner list, scanning from Preview and the like just gave me that error. After a lot of time messing around with this, I activated wifi on the Mac and put it on the network with the printer. Worked fine. It wasn't a good solution for me, so I installed Brother's iPrint&Scan utility, and that let me put in the IP address for the scanner and access it without being on the same subnet.

Mmmm.

Wondering if your printer-scanners "driver" may need updating to be compatible with your Mac.

You could try browsing this article, and making sure the correct printer/scanner is correctly added on your Mac:

Add a printer on Mac

Eg:In most cases, when you add a printer, macOS uses AirPrint to connect to the printer or automatically downloads the printer’s software (also called a printer driver).

Don’t install the software that came with the printer or from the manufacturer’s website;

follow the instructions in one of the tasks below, (in the linked article)

and macOS will prompt you to download the latest software if it’s needed.

If needed:

Epson have a support webpage that may help:

Says about compatibility for your model:

All the best :-)

Hey there!

Does your Mac have any available updates? If so I’d try updating per this article which describes your issue:

'You do not have permission to open the application' when using a scanner on Mac:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212756

Of course if you can’t update, one thing I may try is to quit any print/scan applications or jobs.

Open Finder > Go (Top Menu) > Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Image Capture > Devices.

From there double click on any Epson software, then try to scan again.

I’ve also noticed in the past, this third party print/scan software may get in the way of Image Capture or Preview etc. of printing normally, to where uninstalling those third party apps fixed it.

I’d try the other steps though; update/open driver, etc. from the Finder, and/or as said earlier, look for compatibility specs on their website as well as any available software if needed.

Hi RWWHingham,

Welcome to the Apple Community.

You might want to try:

Clicking the Apple icon from the top menu

Choosing "System Preferences" from the Drop Down menu that opens

Click on the "Printers and Scanners" icon in the small window that opens.

From there you can likely check if the scanner is open, and if not, click to open it, so it can be accessed.

Now, this may or may not be the way the HP printer works.

From the scanner screen, once open,

and the item is scanned,

you can save the file to wherever you wish, (folder / desktop etc)

and

double-click the file, from where you saved it, to open it in Preview.

Sorry if your scanner operates differently to mine !

Hoping this helps you :-)
