My work Iphone is an older model, Iphone 7 (technically not that old at all, is it, we're not talking the pyramids here) and the battery drain since updating is horrendous. I leave work in the afternoon with the phone at 100% and in the morning, with no use at all all night (it's just lying in my bag), it's at 2%. I updated to 15.2 as soon as it came hoping for a fix but it's the same. I don't have any apps running really either so there shouldn't be much background activity.
Battery status tells me now that for the past 24 hrs 39% has gone to the home/lock screen, 29% to the calendar (notifications and widget) and 27% to telephone (which hasn't been used bar one phone call for 2 minutes while the phone was plugged in).
Why is the home screen draining it? I don't have the news widget @DocJekyl but I have deleted the calendar widget anyway since it's part of the draining. We'll see what that does, thank you for the tip to look there.
However, in contrast to the original question, my private phone is a 13 pro and that seems fine, but I might have a skewed sense of fine since I recently updated from an old Iphone SE with poor battery health. ;)
I'm not going to take the risk of updating my old work Ipad (an Air2) for now anyway.

Siobhán ~ The iPhone 7 itself is not old, but its original battery will have inevitably weakened over time and cause the symptoms you describe. What's the % value here?...

Anytime an iOS update messes up battery it can be the OS draining it or a specific app or two.
So to troubleshoot I always turn off push mail and fetch mail, turn off background app refresh, and sometimes turn off Home Screen widgets. Sometimes if have to turn off a lot of location services, and sometimes I have to turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Then I see if it’s better, and if better then I start turning things back on until it breaks again.
In the case of Apple News widget, apple news was using up a high % of battery in the background even with background app refresh turned off. It took me a couple of days to realize I still had the widget loaded. That was only causing about 1/3 of the excessive battery drain.
But reset network settings seems to have fixed it for me on 15.1.1 on iPhone 13 Pro Max and 15.1 on iPad mini 6. So I won’t go to 15.2 yet because I haven’t seen anyone who has the drain with 15.2 get it fixed by resetting network settings. It could be a new problem I just can’t deal with.
This upgrade not only has rendered my phone useless but Apple has stopped signing older IOS so I can't even downgrade to an older version of IOS. This is totally unacceptable, this needs to be rectified so at the very least we can downgrade until Apple comes up with a solution.
I had terrible battery drain with the last 14.x update which I was able to fix by hitting the connections reset. Worked fine and I did not add the 15 upgrades until I saw positive comment about improved battery power on 15.1.2. I took the chance and upgraded. No problems at all. Battery lasts 2 days on a charge (up from 6-8 hours at its worst.)
I don't know if my reset fix just held up or if the 15.2 upgrade is solely responsible. Regardless, I still get a couple of days power with moderate use.
My comments about the 14.x fix are on that thread. Probably near the end of the thread.
Good luck.

I'm 76 and it's my daughters old 6S, I already have a Mophie battery pack on the phone and with the limited use I have for the phone I would normally not have to use the Mophie only plug it in at night. The average use would be around 40 to 60% when I plugged it in at night. I posted again with the results of the battery test.
No the battery was replaced by apple when my daughter gave it to me which was 2 yrs ago. The Mophie was on it before she had it replaced so she just put it back on as a backup. I rarely ever had to use it, the odd time on the golf course if it was a long round and even then I would turn it on at around 40%.
This replay is not useful at all.
