Disappearing iPad note markups

I am a law student and bought my iPad to read/take notes on PDFs using my Apple Pencil. Occasionally, all of the markups I’ve done on a PDF will disappear. Hours of notes will seemingly vanish out of nowhere with no way of recovery. It’s super frustrating and honestly shocking how such a bug (as well as a few other minor issues) could exist on my brand new iPad Pro.

I would greatly appreciate support to resolve this issue. I say respectfully that this $1000+ tablet I bought 2 months ago is unreliable at the fairly basic task I bought it for.

I saw this topic brought up in old forum, but I was unable to find any solutions. My iPad is on ios15.

For somehow reason, I am using apple pencil to write notes on PDF, and suddenly it scrolled up automatically and all the notes just gone...it's really annoying and hours of work just disappeared.

Don’t waste out time, it is valuable to us for each one of ys who gave compkai ed, there are thousands out there with the sane problem. Can ipads really be used for research? I hope so. I am vusion impaired and beed to work on ipad not laptop. Want to do PHD next year, but wondering if Apple is up to the task.

Please resolve. I just bought new ioad $2500 thinking that would resolve problem. Turns out it exists across all your devices. NOT OK?

I am also having this issue. It’s extremely frustrating and unacceptable to have blatant user data loss, with no official response. I’m using an 11-inch 3rd gen iPad Pro, on iPadOS 15.2. On two separate occasions, markups made with Apple Pencil on imported PDFs on 2 different notes in Apple Notes have disappeared. I noticed that the animation of the PDF closing shows the edited version, but as the animation finishes, the recent edits disappear. My WiFi is somewhat spotty, maybe the is the issue as this is a iCloud note. I tried to undo, but the action had no effect. I will see if the issue persists with “On my iPad” notes.

Literally the only reason i bought am iPad in Dec 2021. At first I thought the issue was solely because of poor or interrupted internet connection, so then instead of working off pdfs in iCloud, I saved them in a folder on my iPad. Same issue, and even more frustrating. How can so many hours of work just disappear like that?? Complete and total waste of time, money and patience.

I just purchased a new IPad Air for my office along with an Apple Pencil. I need these tools to mark up catalogs now as many products are no longer presenting a paper catalog. I spent 2 hours in a meeting yesterday, marking up a clothing catalog and nearing the end of my work, all my comments disappeared. If there is not a fix for this, I will be returning my IPad and Pencil for a full refund. Very frustrating losing 2 hours worth of work in a blink with absolutely no resolution. Pardon me, but this is ridiculous and unacceptable for such a costly product.

I am having this same issue in the notes app. I have 3 different case numbers.... NO ONE at Apple seems to be able to help. It seems to me all was good until the latest iOS.

The second person through "contact us", when I told him what I'd done so far, said wow, you've done everything I would have suggested".... he arranged for me to talk to someone else with a better chance to help me, which he didn't. Very frustrating!

Come on Apple.... at the prices of your products you should NOT be having these kind of problems and when they do occur, should be able to remedy a lot fast than you are.

Why did the moderator change the title. Read more carefully. The law student was marking a PDF, not working in notes.

I too just spent three hours working on a PDF and every single mark, text box, whatever, disappeared out of nowhere. Let me be clear that I did not hit done. I was simply in the middle of working.

I bought this $2,000 paper weight because I'm a musician and it's the only thing you can find in 4/3 ratio which is close to letter size paper. I have had nothing but frustration with this device. (If you add a text box to a PDF you cannot move it, for example.) It is my first Apple product and I'm 64 years old and very tech savvy. Never again!

Whether working in notes or in a PDF it’s the same issue. Changes made aren’t being saved.

I’ve been in touch with a senior advisor and sent her a screen shot of a video of what steps I take and what happens. This is going to the tech people to work on is my understanding. I am to receive a call back next week (Feb 2).

Hi,

I would also just like to put it on record here that I also face this issue. I actually saved the pdf each time after I annotate, but somehow, there was something like a glitch when I pressed the home button of the iPad and a lot of my notes disappeared.

A very frustrating issue losing hours of work and having spent the money on this product. I expected better.

Happened to me too, had opened the PDF from Files and had make annotations with a pencil. The next day, files wasnt showing the annotations.

What saved me: I inserted the PDF (insert -> PDF) into a OneNote page, and the annotations were visible there.

Unfortunately, not ALL the notes were where. Some were, some werent. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that you never hit "Close" on any app on an iPad, usually... so at some point it just becomes "minimised" (when you switch to another app), and then the OS frees up memory from minimised apps, maybe some of your notes vanish at that point because there's no explicit "Save" button.

First time experiencing the same issue. Didn't click home button. Did not click undo or delete. Device is up to date. Connected to wifi. Automatically saves to iCloud drive. Have used my iPad for taking notes on PDFs using pencil without problem until today.

Wrote on 83 slides over the course of a 2 hour lecture. Was going to the 84th slide and all notes were gone. Went to restore previous version and the only previous version was the blank slide deck.

Please resolve this issue. Very frustrated. Time and notes lost.

My follow up call..... they are still "working on it". This is just SO frustrating! I wonder how hard they really are working on it.

I can't believe it is taking them this long to fix this.... You'd think it would happening to them too!

Wish I could go back to the old iOS... Next new iOS, I'm not switching for a while until all the bugs are worked out....
