macOS Monterey takes 25+ minutes to boot

Hi, I wonder if anyone else has the same issue:

Just updated to Monterey from Big Sur - and it takes forever to boot (25+ minutes). Already happened several times.

Before I go through the regular steps for slow boot troubleshooting, I wonder if others have the same issue? And possibly a solution?

I did; my problem was a very slow internal drive. At 5400 RPM, the enrtry level HDD just wasn't up to the task.

Replacing use of the internal HDD with an external SSD as boot drive fixed it.

But, before I did that I confirmed the drive was the problem by running Etrecheck Pro I got from https://www.etrecheck.com/.

I have never had issue with boot time with my late 2015 imac , not with the internal drive or my external boot drive i use on a daily bases now. its quit zippy , and i never see anything under a 20 second boot up speed sure thats slower then the internal mac drive but its small. and not so low that it's unusable, makes me wonder what is on these other system that cause the slow boot up speed.

I agree with most of what has been said here regarding the Monterey update and the slow start up.

And I am also a Mac user since more than 20 years, and I agree with some remarks that this has been the worse update I've ever experienced, it's tragic in today's world that a company that is valued at $ 2 trillion that they don't have the resources for professional software developers, and if you think this is not the reason, is it because, like their trick with slowing down older iPhone's in the past with every new iPhone release, that they are trying the same trick now with their Macs ? Whatever they are doing, they are driving me and people like me who are frustrated with the software problems to change to Windows 11.

If you look back in History, all past Empires eventually fell, if Apple don't get their act together soon, I'm afraid the future looks grim and Mr Musk can rub his hands if he goes past just offering a new Smart Phone but a PC solution, maybe running Linux at first.

Monterey is clearly slowed down on Intel Macs due to the Intel emulation layer.  This version should never have been released on the Intel based Macs and there is no way that this could ever have been seriously tested.

I have spent multiple unsuccessful Genius appointments only to learn that Apple cannot or will not support my family who collectively own 4 Macs, 3 iPhones, 2 iPads and an Apple Watch. Apple would not even downgrade me back to Big Sur which ran perfectly and speedily.

I lost all access to my Apple Mac backups because of Apple’s proprietary encryption standards which preclude reading from non-Apple platforms.

I had to track down 3rd party SSDs and  freelancing Unix Engineers in order to make my macs work again.  It has been a 4 month nightmare.

I now have two functioning macs and my new project is a migration away from proprietary vendor lock-in and towards open, non-Apple platforms.  I will never forget Apple’s actions in 2022 and their cavalier actions towards their customers.

Yes, I agree as well! Monterey was not even close to ready for release. We have been all Apple for over a decade, but as I’ve written elsewhere, I did have to purchase a Samsung Galaxy Windows laptop in order to function after the Monterey upgrade. When I first went to Apple I was so impressed with the quality, in particular the speed and reliability.

Amusingly, I’ve now found that I am highly impressed with the quality, speed and reliability of the Samsung Windows laptop. I’ve had multiple failed Genius appointments with Monterey and I hear conversations with Apple staff trying to help normal people “plan their migration paths.” I’m ok but annoyed with this as a highly technical Distributed Software Engineer of 30 years, but most Apple customers want user friendly solutions. I imagine that for many their “migration path” will be Windows devices.

That’s interesting. Apple scheduled a Genius appointment with me to install a third party SSD and macOS but when I got there, with a meeting printout of all of he things which the Genius would do the Genius said that they would not do anything like that.

Everything and Anything Apple in our household is currently in containment. We rely on these expensive devices and it is difficult to accept failure coupled with no support and migration path.

Since updating to Monterey I also am facing issues with my MBA. After pushing the power button it looks like nothing is happening and almost 30 seconds later the chime is heard.

I used it to watch PeacockTV and just paused or stopped the play and closed the lid. (power connected) Only to receive no response from the MBA when I opened the lid (deep sleep??)

Now every time I used it and am finished I shut it down to avoid the deep sleep issues but this delayed startup is also not helpful.
