macOS Monterey takes 25+ minutes to boot

Hi, I wonder if anyone else has the same issue:

Just updated to Monterey from Big Sur - and it takes forever to boot (25+ minutes). Already happened several times.

Before I go through the regular steps for slow boot troubleshooting, I wonder if others have the same issue? And possibly a solution?

Thanks, that's good to know.

My system is also on an external SSD drive. So it appears that Monterey has problems specifically with external drives.

Because I was testing Monterey also on my internal drive and there was no issues (the internal drive is Fusion and I don't use it for real work as it's too slow).

I submitted a bug to Apple.

As a developer I have to upgrade early. Usually there's no issues. But Apple screwed up this time with Monterey.

You mentioned "verbose mode output"... How do you activate it - I'm not familiar with this option?

Yes, I agree as well! Monterey was not even close to ready for release. We have been all Apple for over a decade, but as I’ve written elsewhere, I did have to purchase a Samsung Galaxy Windows laptop in order to function after the Monterey upgrade. When I first went to Apple I was so impressed with the quality, in particular the speed and reliability.

Amusingly, I’ve now found that I am highly impressed with the quality, speed and reliability of the Samsung Windows laptop. I’ve had multiple failed Genius appointments with Monterey and I hear conversations with Apple staff trying to help normal people “plan their migration paths.” I’m ok but annoyed with this as a highly technical Distributed Software Engineer of 30 years, but most Apple customers want user friendly solutions. I imagine that for many their “migration path” will be Windows devices.

That’s interesting. Apple scheduled a Genius appointment with me to install a third party SSD and macOS but when I got there, with a meeting printout of all of he things which the Genius would do the Genius said that they would not do anything like that.

Everything and Anything Apple in our household is currently in containment. We rely on these expensive devices and it is difficult to accept failure coupled with no support and migration path.

Could this be related to using non-Apple SSDs? I'm using a 2015 MBP with a Samsung 970 EVO. I've always taken pride in how well maintained my Mac is but, after upgrading to Monterey, boot time has gone from about 20 seconds to about 3 minutes. No obvious errors in Console logs or EtreCheck. Booting macOS just seems to hang mid-way for a few minutes. Very frustrating.

OK, so my problem is I'm using a Samsung 970 Evo.

The following NVMe drives cause Monterey boot problems if TRIM is enabled:

Samsung 950 Pro

Samsung 960 Evo/Pro

Samsung 970 Evo/Pro

Lots of discussion about this on Reddit and the Hackintosh forums. Samsung NVMe drives are best avoided, apparently. With TRIM disabled (not advisable) boot times return too under 30 seconds.

Perhaps Samsung or Apple will fix this, but it's unlikely.

I've got a 2016 13" MacBook Pro without touchbar, and have upgraded it to a 1TB SSD from Fledging.

The SSD works brilliantly, but since installing Monterey last October, boot times are 10+ minutes.

Once it's booted, the laptop works brilliantly, but the boot time is SO frustrating.

Hopefully Apple will rectify this problem with the next major release this year, as so many people rely on 3rd party SSDs as Apple's own prices are bonkers for storage. I can live with my 10+min boot time, but it's annoying as heck. And when I've paid over £1000 for a laptop in the first place, I should be able to upgrade it without having huge decreases in experience.

Hi, just wanted to say that i had this same issue. MacOS installed on external SSD. I solved this issue by doing a formatting the SSD with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then i restored from Time Machine and checked everything except System Settings. Now the boot time is like it was with Big Sur.

Sorry for my bad english btw, but I´m German haha

Best Regards

I doubt it. My 2016 MBP 13" Retina has a 1TB OWC SSD; my 2015 21.5" iMac Retina has a Samsung EVO 860 (yes I opened the case) and both boot very quickly:

The 2015 iMac in 22 to 25 second from cold to login in screen

2016 MBP is usually 5-8 seconds behind the iMac.

Yes, I time them both in testing for improvements

Since updating to Monterey I also am facing issues with my MBA. After pushing the power button it looks like nothing is happening and almost 30 seconds later the chime is heard.

I used it to watch PeacockTV and just paused or stopped the play and closed the lid. (power connected) Only to receive no response from the MBA when I opened the lid (deep sleep??)

Now every time I used it and am finished I shut it down to avoid the deep sleep issues but this delayed startup is also not helpful.

macOS Monterey takes 25+ minutes to boot
