iPhone 13 Pro loses bluetooth connection to car 2-8 minutes after starting a phone call

I recently purchased a new iPhone 13 Pro (then exchanged for an iPhone 13 Pro Max) to replace my iPhone XR. Here is the info on the problem I am seeing for your developers:

Hardware: iPhone 13 Pro Max, running iOS 15.0.2

Car: 2016 Toyota Avalon

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Car
  2. Allow phone to connect with car via bluetooth.
  3. Start a phone call
  4. Connection between the car and phone fails anywhere from 2-8 minutes after the call starts.
    1. The phone call continues on the phone, but the car thinks the call has ended. After this point bluetooth functionality no longer works properly until I restart the car.

Other details:

- The phone has no issues playing bluetooth audio to the car. Issue only happens on phone calls.

- My old iPhone XR did not have this problem, but was not running iOS 15.

Steps I have taken to fix the problem:

  1. Stopped/started bluetooth service on iPhone
  2. Enabled then disabled Airplane mode on iPhone
  3. Re-paired the iPhone to the car after forgetting bluetooth settings on both devices.
  4. Restart iPhone
  5. Force restart iPhone
  6. Updated software on car
  7. Reset all settings on iPhone
  8. Disabled 5G (settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings -> Voice & Date = LTE)
  9. Exchanged my iPhone 13 Pro for an iPhone 13 Pro Max, still have the issue

The iPhone is unusable for calls in my car which is really frustrating. Hopefully someone out there has seen something like this and has a solution/workaround. Or maybe this will make it to the developers and they can try and fix the issue.

Today I ran another experiment. I still have my original (working) iPhone XR. I gifted it to my son when I upgraded to the iPhone 13 Max. Here is what I did:

  1. Upgraded the iPhone XR to iOS 15.1
  2. Connected the phone to my car
  3. Drove around on a call with the iPhone XR connected

At no time did the iPhone XR disconnect or drop the call that I was on. I drove in many spots where the iPhone 13 Pro Max disconnected/dropped calls.

I plan on running a couple more controlled experiments on my iPhone 13 Pro Max over the next few days. One when connected to bluetooth in our other car (not a Toyota) and another in my Toyota but not moving. We'll see what happens.

Hopefully someone at Apple will see this thread and find this info helpful when trying to fix/recreate the issue.

i have these exact same drop issues between my new iPhone 13 (my first iPhone at age 52) and my 2016 4Runner and it is maddening! The fact that this isn’t an easily fixable thing based on things I’ve read here and in other forums makes me feel like I’ve gone back 20+ years in time. I hope something is figured out soon! I can’t live this way and will need to go back to Samsung or another Android.

I have exactly the same problem with my Toyota Highlander 2016 after upgrading to iPhone 13 Pro. I also don’t have apple car play in my car. I never had this problem with my XR. And most of the time the call doesn’t drop, it drops the Bluetooth on the car but the call is still continuing on my phone which sometimes I had to use speaker to finish my call and having a phone on your hand can get you fined. But that been said there are times the whole call drops. Although the call dropped from the car Bluetooth, I can still see my call history on the screen of my car as well as the car showing my phone is connected for phone and audio. If I try to call from my car as soon as the call dropped the car screen displays “you can dial now”. I do make a lot of calls while driving and it is a safety concern while driving and toggling between speaker, headset and trying again to reconnect with the car which for me is always unsuccessful unless I had to remove the highlander from my iPhone and remove the iPhone Bluetooth in the car and reconnect them again. It is very frustrating and unsafe, from this thread there is a trend specially with Toyota cars. Checked my Highlander software for any updates and it is up to date. I hope apple will come with a fix soon. Apple help please, or you will lose old time customers!

I have this problem with my iPhone 13 pro max when paired to my 2015 Toyota Camry XSE. The call will disconnect from the vehicle, then reconnect every few minutes. Sometimes the call flat out drops. Switching to handset mode does not help. This happens every time without fail so my phone is unusable in the car, it's so frustrating!

I am updating my iPhone 13 Pro Max from 15.2.1 to 15.3.1 as we speak and will report back. Hopefully updating to 15.3.1 fixes the issue!

15.3 did not correct this issue on my iPhone 12 Pro and 2021 Toyota Tacoma with the latest Toyota software. when i have my Airpod Pro in 1 ear and vehicle turned on and bluetooth turned on in the truck, the bluetooth drops out about every 30 seconds and then reconnects. it doesn't matter if i'm using it on the truck speaker/mic, the phone/airpods or with the airpods not in either ear and using only the truck speaker/mic. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING, to say the least.

Hi, there I've got same issue with bluetooth in car, each longer calls are dropped. I tested my 12pro max in several toyota (2008-2018) cars but also in audi A4, A6, and A8 (cars from 2010-2019), many VW (cars from 2008-2015) like passat and arteon and with all tries connection to bluetooth during calls was dropped but call was still present in iphone.

I sent at least 20 feedback to apple but no reaction. I made a test with my old iphone 6s, with firmware 12.xx all was ok but after i made upgrade to 14 problems start, also siri start to make buzzz in car's audio speaker just before she answer to my question which wasn't present before upgrade to 14.

All what online apple or shop service can tell me was: "make a restoration" which of course doesn't help at all

I'm tired, I spent so much money for 12P-max and now to make calls without interruption I just don't use my car audio which is frustrating when radio plays .

Since I got the IPhone 12 Pro Max my car does the same thing. It’s a Cadillac Escalade. Car says it can’t make calls with Bluetooth device. Also I have another Bluetooth item in my home that it won’t connect with. Sad thing is, some things it will connect with but not my car and another item in my house. SO FRUSTRATING. I will probably take the phone back because I can’t take my car back. I just HAVE to have Bluetooth in my car for driving. I have tried everything I have seen online. Repairing, powering off, system updates, network resets. I think this phone just has some new Bluetooth hardware that doesn’t play well with others. Adios iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I have 13 Pro Max since 5 days and have similar issue with my 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. I use iOS 15.3 and the incoming calls are fine, I can make calls from the car using the cars stereo, but if I try to end the call from the steering wheel, the phone disconnects from car and the call transfers to the phone and didn’t end. After that I can’t connect to the car, only when I restart the car. This is my first iPhone, with Android phones I’ve never had problems making and answering calls from this car (latest phone was an S21 Ultra with no issues).
