iPhone 13 Pro loses bluetooth connection to car 2-8 minutes after starting a phone call

I recently purchased a new iPhone 13 Pro (then exchanged for an iPhone 13 Pro Max) to replace my iPhone XR. Here is the info on the problem I am seeing for your developers:

Hardware: iPhone 13 Pro Max, running iOS 15.0.2

Car: 2016 Toyota Avalon

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Car
  2. Allow phone to connect with car via bluetooth.
  3. Start a phone call
  4. Connection between the car and phone fails anywhere from 2-8 minutes after the call starts.
    1. The phone call continues on the phone, but the car thinks the call has ended. After this point bluetooth functionality no longer works properly until I restart the car.

Other details:

- The phone has no issues playing bluetooth audio to the car. Issue only happens on phone calls.

- My old iPhone XR did not have this problem, but was not running iOS 15.

Steps I have taken to fix the problem:

  1. Stopped/started bluetooth service on iPhone
  2. Enabled then disabled Airplane mode on iPhone
  3. Re-paired the iPhone to the car after forgetting bluetooth settings on both devices.
  4. Restart iPhone
  5. Force restart iPhone
  6. Updated software on car
  7. Reset all settings on iPhone
  8. Disabled 5G (settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings -> Voice & Date = LTE)
  9. Exchanged my iPhone 13 Pro for an iPhone 13 Pro Max, still have the issue

The iPhone is unusable for calls in my car which is really frustrating. Hopefully someone out there has seen something like this and has a solution/workaround. Or maybe this will make it to the developers and they can try and fix the issue.

All,

I am happy to announce that Apple Support contacted me this morning to inform me of update 15.2. This update has fixed my problem so far. No more disconnects during phone calls in my Tundra.

Please do this update and post your results here.

Thank you Apple Support for listening to our feedback!

I have a 2016 Toyota Highlander with CarPlay. With my iPhone 12 running IOS 14 I never had an issue. Ever since upgrading to iOS 15 I have had issues with connecting with the car Bluetooth. I’ve tried several times to delete the Bluetooth and reconnect and hard starting my phone and nothing seems to fix it. Every time I am on a phone call I get constant error messages that my phone does not support the Bluetooth accessory then it will eventually cut the call off. It is completely frustrating. I put in a complaint to Apple directly

Hi,

Same issue, I have a Nokia CK600 Car kit and I have three iPhone and same problem on all phone (XR, 11 , 11 pro).

The Car kit is have a music play ability, and a phone book management too. Everything is woking properly expect the phone calling. But only one strange thing, the call starting is working properly from the car kit, but when the call has been established the phone is change back the voice to the phone. If I start a call from the iPhone, the car kit is sensing the cal properly but if I try to transfer the voice to the car kit, it is fall back to iPhone without any error message.

I tried the following:

  • restart iphone
  • restart iphone bluetooth
  • restart the car kit
  • reset the car kit, and pair ing the phone with car kit
  • reset the bluetooth on the iPhone
  • reset the network setting on the iphone

But nothing help on the issue.

Pleae let me know if somebody is have a idea what can I do?

Best Regards,

GáborS

my iPhone 13 disconnects from the Bluetooth after five to six minutes , it doesn’t cut off completely and let’s me talk on speaker. But not thru the Bluetooth until I restart the car. I just went to the Verizon store and they said it’s a Toyota problem. What do you say ? It’s extreme frustrating not to be able to finish a call.

Volvo XC60 late 2009, iOS 14.2 and iPhone 13 Pro Max - issues still exists and my phone disconnects still the same. One or two call are fine, then I lock my phone screen and suddenly the phone and the car stops communicating. iPhone then says disconnected but my car is frozen saying "connected" or "dialing" but nothing is happening on the phone. This starts to feel like hardware issue with the newer iPhone bluetooth chips. Hope we see a recall program soon.

This issue is not happening (and never was) on my work phone - iPhone XS Max on iOS 15.2

I have a 13Pro and began having these dropped call issue on my 2017 Toyota Highlander the moment I upgraded my iPhone 7. I have had the same issues that most people describe in this blog. Dropped call within three to eight minutes of making a call yet the call remains connected and I then have to use the speaker on the phone to continue the call. After reading this entire blog I sought out the 15.2 software upgrade in the hopes i just may have fixed the problem. Downloaded it last night. I called my wife on the way into work this morning. Alas at the 4:49 minute mark the blue tooth dropped and I was forced to use the speaker on he phone. 15.2 did not solve that issue...Very frustrating!

Mine does the same thing only when I’m on phone calls and every time I’m on a phone call the car will drop from Bluetooth in about 3 to 5 minutes. Then the Bluetooth in my 2016 Toyota tundra will display audio player is not connected. This is pretty serious and a hazard so I hope either Apple or Toyota or maybe both of them together and get this fixed soon as I see this has been going on for months with a lot of people. On another note, when I am using Pandora it never drops at all. It only happens soon as I get on a phone call within minutes

Well, the new IOS update didn't help me either. I had 1 successful call, the 1st one after the update (and not to forget paying the dealer $75 to upgrade my head unit in my 2017 Tundra)....subsequent calls after were dropped by Bluetooth. In fact, the last call that dropped, while I was driving, shut down my entire stereo system and it rebooted itself...just like if I had started the ignition and it went through it's start up process. I want this fixed and I want to be reimbursed by Apple for the $75 I spent to have my Toyota computer upgraded (I never had any issues until I switched from my iPhone 8+ to the 13 Pro). This is all on Apple's shoulders!

I’ve had Bluetooth calling issues for about 3 months now. When I make a regular call, after a few seconds to a few minutes, call gets garbled and I have to switch back to the phone to continue the call. Music(streaming lossless), FaceTime audio calls with zero issues. I’ve had my iPhone 11 for a little over a year now. Bought it brand new from Apple. Very annoying! This happens with my AirPods, as well as my 2022 Subaru Legacy Bluetooth connection. This points to the Bluetooth chip in the phone as the problem. Apple needs to correct this. I wiped my phone and started fresh(not restoring from backup) and still have the issue. I am on iOS 15.1 about to upgrade to 15.2 to see if this is fixed.

This is most likely a hardware issue, one reason this issue has been going on for many months now. My bet is Apple is trying to figure out how much it's going to cost them to replace a Bluetooth chip on the motherboard. Sometimes even good manufacturers like Apple are stung by cheaper and inferior products they purchase to manufacture their devices.

I’m joining this crusade to get apple to pay attention to this issue. My family talked me into getting an iPhone 13 pro max after roughly 15 years of being a die hard android user and on my 3rd Toyota Tundra in the same period of time. It feels like I’ve spent more time at the Verizon store or on IPhone support calls than working the past 9 days. I cannot have a conversation for more than 2-3 minutes without the paring between my truck and my new iPhone being dropped. I can only continue the call occasionally if I quickly touch the screen on the phone and switch to speaker mode. I have days where I have 6-7 calls to get through a 10 minute conversation, which in itself is incredibly aggravating, but will ultimately end up with me rear ending someone if Apple cannot fix this.

I never had the issue with my Samsung, Motorola, or Google Pixel phones. I have had Verizon change setting, change the SIM card, IPhone support had me do a back up and reset to default settings. Apple should understand and build phones to work in vehicles without CarPlay. Non of my vehicles have had it and they all worked fine.

This weekend I tried disconnecting my iPhone 13 pro max and connecting my daughters iPhone XR. We made several calls for more than 10 minutes each with no problem. When we got back from driving around I left to run a couple errands. I made calls to my daughter and my wife and both had dropped calls within 2 minutes. Apple, if you are paying attention, please fix this issue. It’s a safety hazard to have this happen and make hands free impossible.

Same issue here, upgraded from iPhone X to 13 max pro on Verizon, cannot stay connected to Bluetooth in my 2016 4Runner running IOS 15.1. Continually drop calls on Bluetooth every couple of minutes, sometimes less than a minute of connectivity, cannot maintain any Bluetooth connection for calls for any length of time. Bluetooth works fine for music, it’s only calls that are impacted.

Never has any issues with my old iPhone X, this is complete cra**.

Using my work iPhone 11 running IOS 15.1,zero issues with Bluetooth calls

Apple please acknowledge this issue and apply a hot fix

iPhone 12 Pro Max running 15.1.1 here. My Bluetooth connects to my 2013 Renault Megane for music, but as soon as I try to make a call, it gets redirected back to my phone. I try to reselect the car as the audio, but it just keeps doing the same. Had no problems with my XR previously, and the 12 pro max was fine up until a certain point, which I can only assume was iOS 15!? Will try the 15.2 update, and give the USB cable addition a try.

I bought new cords (from AT&T) for car and desktop due to both disconnecting on their own and the new iPhone 13 cords fixed both issues - car and desktop. I can’t explain why the new cords fixed the issues I was having with both getting disconnected. Just my experience that I wanted to share. It was aggravating until I discovered this. Glad it’s repaired. Hope it works for you.
