iPhone 13 Pro loses bluetooth connection to car 2-8 minutes after starting a phone call

I recently purchased a new iPhone 13 Pro (then exchanged for an iPhone 13 Pro Max) to replace my iPhone XR. Here is the info on the problem I am seeing for your developers:

Hardware: iPhone 13 Pro Max, running iOS 15.0.2

Car: 2016 Toyota Avalon

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start Car
  2. Allow phone to connect with car via bluetooth.
  3. Start a phone call
  4. Connection between the car and phone fails anywhere from 2-8 minutes after the call starts.
    1. The phone call continues on the phone, but the car thinks the call has ended. After this point bluetooth functionality no longer works properly until I restart the car.

Other details:

- The phone has no issues playing bluetooth audio to the car. Issue only happens on phone calls.

- My old iPhone XR did not have this problem, but was not running iOS 15.

Steps I have taken to fix the problem:

  1. Stopped/started bluetooth service on iPhone
  2. Enabled then disabled Airplane mode on iPhone
  3. Re-paired the iPhone to the car after forgetting bluetooth settings on both devices.
  4. Restart iPhone
  5. Force restart iPhone
  6. Updated software on car
  7. Reset all settings on iPhone
  8. Disabled 5G (settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Settings -> Voice & Date = LTE)
  9. Exchanged my iPhone 13 Pro for an iPhone 13 Pro Max, still have the issue

The iPhone is unusable for calls in my car which is really frustrating. Hopefully someone out there has seen something like this and has a solution/workaround. Or maybe this will make it to the developers and they can try and fix the issue.

Definitely not a car manufacturer problem

I drive a Porsche and face the same issue. My Porsche also has a dual system for CarPlay, which is separate to the main system, and even with that the Bluetooth has issues.

My wife’s iPhone XR works normally with it, and my X used to work perfectly fine. Since the day I got the 12 pro I’ve had this problem since day 1

I could not get any other answer from support other than I needed to check with my car manufacturer, which happens to be Toyota, regarding an update on their end. Support told me it’s not a phone problem it’s my car. 😩 It’s so frustrating! I read where someone used their usb cable and that worked for them, but it didn’t for me.

Apple takes no responsibility?

There was no difficulty at all with my iPhone 7 but with iPhone 13 service is so spotty or even lately no Bluetooth connection whatsoever ? I’ve reset everything numerous times. Even with hooking up now my Know Your Drive (American Family) directly with a cable now iPhone is not being recognized. Is this the same problem or something different.

Car is a Toyota.

I have Volvo XC60 with hands free phone system. Worked fine with Apple XR which I replaced one week ago with Apple 13 pro and now it the car phone system has gone haywire. Have tried everything - repaired twice, changed phone name, car can read calls logged etc and phone shows that it is connected to my car but calls just either won't go through or won't connect to speakers - its a nightmare - nearly crashed trying to end the call on the car which kept saying it was still in progress when it clearly wasn't. Then kept showing 'hands free off' sign in the car phone panel... I am at my wits end. Spoke with Apple but they said they don't have this problem and to check with Volvo for an update - but on here it is obvious they do. The XR had no problems at all. Feel like going back to it

I have also XC60 and the same problem since iPhone 12 14.4 and now with 13 Pro Max until 15.2.

Updated my car at Volvo dealer did not help, so save your money and don't do it.

What I can recommend to you, is to get the iOS 15.3 public b. You can have at least incoming calls working again. Or just wait a little for the release of official version.

I spent the time with apple tech support and senior tech support. There is no fix. I am going the route of a new after market radio system that supports Apple Play. I ask support if there was data that proved an after market system with apple play would fix, I couldn’t get a 100% positive from support that this would be a fix but a possibility. At the very least, Apple needs to have a consumer disclosure to check if their phones are compatible with your car manufacturer for all advertised functions. It’s a big deal to me in my profession to have this function and wish I would have known that it wasn’t functional.

Similar issue in a 2009 Chevy truck, except that it seems to mess with iphone13 settings afterwards such that no phone calls can be made again until the phone has been re-started. Well, they can be dialed, but you can't get audio on the phone or in the car and the person on the other end of the call hears dead air. Maddening. I will be asking to downgrade back to the XS.

I bought new cords (from AT&T) for car and desktop due to both disconnecting on their own and the new iPhone 13 cords fixed both issues - car and desktop. I can’t explain why the new cords fixed the issues I was having with both getting disconnected. Just my experience that I wanted to share. It was aggravating until I discovered this. Glad it’s repaired. Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the information, but this issue has to do with Bluetooth disconnecting during calls and is not related to CarPlay or wired connections.

Anyone have any luck with 15.2.1? I am not able to update to 15.2.1 at the moment try this out.

I have spent several hours working Apple on this. I’d estimate that I’ve recreated this issue about 10 times for them under different conditions with different settings. Each time providing them with diagnostics. Hopefully something has yielded good info for them to fix the issue.

You seem to think CarPlay has nothing to do with Bluetooth and phone calls? It’s all connected. And for your information Bluetooth calls still disconnect too. Also tried wireless CarPlay which does rely on Bluetooth on aftermarket head unit. It’s crap too. Disconnects after no more than 10 minutes on calls. Then when the call drops wireless CarPlay dies immediately.

He meant that this discussion is all about people using bluetooth handsfree in cars without carplay (see original post). So if you're having carplay issue or wired issue, you should make a different thread. You can't mix those things up. It's completely unrelated to the bluetooth handsfree call drops issue we're having in older cars without carplay.
