Charging the 2021 16" MacBook Pro?

Can I use a MagSafe 3 cable attached to a 96w charger to charge the new 16" MacBook Pro? Or does it have to be attached to the new 140w charger? (I assume charging would be slower on the 96w, of course.)

Hi Camp Creek,

We see you linked to the Apple Support Communities from Charge your 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro, and have questions about charging the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

For the best experience, is recommended that you use the charger included with the Mac. The included charger is designed to deliver the power needed, depending on the requirements of the device. More info is available, here: About Mac power adapters

That being said, the MacBook Pro 16" can also be charged over USB-C.

We hope this helps!

Regarding the answer, it's still not clear. I currently have several magsafe 2 adapters, which are no good for this new macbook. Therefore, in order to have another adapter for travel (I don't want to be climbing under my desk to unplug the included adapter to bring it whenever I go anywhere), I need to purchase another charger.

The difference between the 140w charger and the 67w one is $40 (i.e. 40% cheaper). If I can get away with purchasing that one instead (or the 96w), I would prefer it, even if it doesn't charge as fast. But if it won't work, I obviously don't want to purchase it. Some guidance as to what "charging via usb C" means would be good.

The store only lists the 140w charger as compatible with the 16" macbook pro, but I've read that not all 140w are used if you use USB C. So wouldn't that suggest a lower wattage brick can be used?

So I just got off the phone with Apple sales. The rep said actually you can use any adapter to charge it, even the 30w, it just will charge slower. I actually have my wife's Macbook Air's 30w charger plugged in right now, and it seems to be keeping the charge (not doing anything taxing though).

So despite the store saying only the 140w is compatible, any Apple USB C charger will do.
