Me again, I got down to the underlying TV setting's audio last night, and found that it was not set to use its own speakers. I reset that and then the tvOS audio came out the TV speakers again. I have not idea how the underlying TV's audio settings got messed up, but it all works now.
What I would like to know is how to contact development to ensure this issue gets fixed. I can't find anywhere on the support site to register a bug.
Maybe here via a developer account ? https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/
Same issue here (using an HDMI to HDMI+toslink splitter) worked fine before 15.1
none of the audio settings combinations gives any sound
Same problem here.
I have a setup with an Apple TV HD, a projector without audio and an HDMI audio extractor in between which sends the audio to a PA system.
Since the Apple TV auto upgraded itself to 15.1.1 I have no more audio.
The device is completely useless now as I don't have any other way to get audio in that particular setup.
I've send feedback via https://www.apple.com/feedback/apple-tv/ as well.
Same problem here, with an Apple TV HD 4th generation, going into a Sony STR-DH820 audiovisual receiver. The receiver passes the video through to my projector, but I get no audio. (I do get audio if I plug the Apple TV directly into a television though.) This setup has worked for years until a recent tvOS update. Changing the Apple TV's audio format setting to Stereo doesn't help, nor does changing the Audio Mode setting from Auto to 16 bit.
Oops! You're right NotWozzy. I just noticed my mistake.
I lost audio after my Apple TV HD auto-updated to 15.1 and then 15.1.1. I had audio with 15.0.
I have sound when I turn my Samsung TV on before turning on the Apple TV.
Sorry for the confusion.
This thread is about tvOS, the operating system for the Apple TV. I'd recommend posting your question in the iOS section of this forum instead. Good luck!
>I am having audio issues since my 15.1 update. How did you fix this issue? My phone only works in speakera mode or with airpods.
Same for me with direct connection to Sony Bravia
@apple - either release a quick fix or roll back the version, it’s a major bug and the TV is not usable without it consider you also has all TV subscriptions through your device
Having the same issue. Apple tv non 4k to hdmi sound extractor switch in to sonos soundbar via optical cable to projector via hmi out. Since update 15.1.1 no more sound. When it was working flawlessly before.
Apple can you please fix that problem?
I’ve been following this thread for a few weeks since I’m experiencing the exact same issue and resorting to my PS5 to play content.
My setup is a projector + AppleTV to HDMI splitter with Optical Out to Sonos Soundbar.

Well I’m surprised that my comment was edited, but I mentioned that I noticed there was a release of a newer version of the OS. I guess I can’t say a certain word from the Greek alphabet without it getting deleted here, but I tried installing it and it didn’t fix the problem either.
So as extra sanity check i went ahead and bought a Roku Ultra during cyber Monday and now the sound on my sonos play bar is back on.
Apple really need to fix their firmware.
My set up is Roku hmi to switch audio extractor hdmi in then switch hdmi out to projector and optical cable audio out to sonos playbar.
Funny thing is several months ago I bought the ATV4k to replace a Roku that stopped sending sound due to a software update. Actually the Roku made a horrible screeching noise which was worse. Roku did eventually fix theirs, so when Apple broke it I switched back.
I’m also using a PS5 now with a surprising drop in video quality. In any event, does anyone know how to upgrade to the “other” cannot be named version of the OS? I don’t see an option in the Settings.
Sony 950h tv and lost all audio all of a sudden. it seems to have worked for a bit under the new tvOS 15.1.1 but came home tonite and no audio and nothing I do fixes it. even tried another Apple TV and it didn't work with the Sony tv. Works fine with older 1080p Samsung in the bedroom though. this is terrible.
