Bluetooth pairing between iPhone and Mac Mini M1 "not supported"

Hi. I'm unable to connect my iPhone (iOS 15.1) to my Mac Mini M1 (MacOS 12.0.1). The initial pairing seems to work as the code verification pops up on both the iPhone and the Mac, however it never actually connects and I get the following message:

Connection Unsuccessful

"Name of my device" is not supported.

Forget Device (button)

Has anyone run into same issue?

I'm not sure it has anything to do with iCloud.

My iMac M1 will not connect to my iPad or iPhone nor will it allow my iMac to unlock using my Apple Watch. This all seems to have been a problem since the 12.1 update.

In the Bluetooth settings on the iMac I can pair the iPad and iPhone but both immediately go to 'not connected', if I then select 'connect' it shows connected for around 2 seconds and drops back to 'not connected'. Clicking the option to unlock the iMac with my watch leaves it twirling for a while before becoming unchecked again. (The watch and the iPhone are paired with each other with no problems)

This is becoming frustrating.

I agree with you that is my experience everything works.

But the point was that Apple support and Apple supervisor support and Apple technical support supporting the support didn’t know that point

I have no explanation for why they were not able to give you the answer. There's nothing in the support document that says you need to pair anything:

No. The debug menu is not part of Monterey. The only way to do this is to restart your computer, or use a Terminal command:

How to Reset the Bluetooth Module in Post-Catalina:

In macOS 12 Monterey, performing the above is not a part of the GUI (Graphical User Interphase)*. However, there is an alternative route: To reset the Bluetooth Module on MacOS Monterey (and maybe other versions to come), you can reset the Bluetooth Module through use of Terminal.**

Use this Command:

sudo pkill bluetoothd

Debug is NOT an option once you have upgraded to Monterey. what I read tells me I have to have my iPad and my iPhone linked to the mac on bluetooth if I want to use HANDOVER or MESSAGES between the three devices. Exactly like you I get these devices to pair with a code but then they show as DISCONNECTED and when you click on them they advise the mac mini is not supported. The iPad and the iPhone are brand new, the Mac Mini is 2020 model with M1 chip - and they cant bluetooth together ! a bit crappy !

I am far from sure about this but to me it seems I have solved the problem however not as expected. I am just guessing but it looks like you have to CHOOSE between using iCloud for these functions OR to be using Bluetooth. The guides and instructions available are far from being crystal clear and I have not seen anything that tells us to choose one or the other. However if you toss out the idea of using Bluetooth even though it says you can and should and if you just use iCloud then everything works fine and all syncs correctly. My iPad, iPhone, Mac mini and MacBook Pro all sync contacts and browser settings etc. no problems.

hope this helps, if anyone works out how to set both to work so systems choose best automatically then do let us know. All best for the new year

I am fairly sure it simply does not work at all. What I am not sure about is is it us actually SUPPOSED to work ok !, it seems to be that if you use iCloud to do all sync working and all handoff functions then it all works just fine. Mine works 100% fine all services iPhone 13, Mac mini M1, Apple Watch series 2 and older MacBook Pro all with up to date IOS or OS etc, But nothing works if trying to use Bluetooth!!!! I get the exact same totally useless crap “unsupported device” messages as you all do. What is annoying is that I have not found anywhere info that says you must choose between Bluetooth or iCloud but so far it does seem to me this is what you are supposed to do. It does not seem possible to enable both ways of doing these things and then to let these hw and sw systems decide for themselves which is optimum to execute. It looks like if you follow exact apple instructions re the Bluetooth you end up totally f…d and go nowhere. Makes you feel like you are having a “Microsoft day” !! The instructions re Bluetooth are just crap and useless and actually from apple I would expect better!! I gave up and use iCloud and it all works ok. If anyone works out how to use Bluetooth pairing that actually does work with all sync and handoff functions etc then do please let us know. Looks to me like the Bluetooth team at apple are not actually the brightest bulbs on their Xmas tree when compared to the apple iCloud team ! Cheers.

Sorry no idea re watch connect to mac. Never wanted or needed to do that but can see it would be good and i understand it is supposed to be possible but i guess we have to wait to see if the apple support team ever bothers to actually look st the problems we discuss in these forums and then actually gets the bluetooth connectivity working as they say it should.

Same issue here - cannot connect for more than a second or two, using an Mac M1 Mini ( OS Monterey 12.01) and an iPhone 8 (iOS 15.2). Mac BT Preferences gets it to connect for just a second, but then it drops to "Not Connected"; meawhile the iPhone says the M1 is "Not Supported". AirDrop on the iPhone can't be used, which is really annoying.

Mac connects to mouse and keyboard via BT with no problems, and both devices can successfully connect to my AirPods.

(And yes, this has absolutely nothing to do with iCloud - please just drop that conversation.)

I've tried every possible variation of reset methods and have finally come up with one that seems to work. It's only been a few days, though - I will update this thread if this turns out only to be temporary.

This is what worked for me(so far):

Mac: Turn off Bluetooth

iPhone: Settings -> Bluetooth -> select Mac (touch the circle with an "i" in it) and "Forget this device"

iPhone: Turn off Bluetooth

iPhone: Completely power down

Mac: Turn Bluetooth back on

iPhone: Power back on, turn on Bluetooth, pair the iPhone and the Mac back together.
