USB 3.0 Hub Broken on Mac OS Monterey 12.0.1

Since upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, solely the USB 3.0 port on my Hub has stopped working. Power is allowed to pass through to connected devices, however the transfer of data has stopped working.

Everything was working on Mac OS Big Sur, and it is only since updating to Monterey it has stopped working. I have found several reports on the developer forums for Mac OS stating this was an issue since around Beta 3 for some users, and there are reports on Reddit of other people having this issue.

Apple Support were useless and told me to bring my Mac in for repair (despite it only being 4 days old and the issue happening directly after an update) I took the Hub back to the place of purchase and they tested it on a Mac with Big Sur installed and it worked. When plugging it into another Mac that had been updated to Monterey the 3.0 Port stopped working.

It's an Advent Hub, not some dodgy knockoff one of Amazon. It worked absolutely fine prior to the Monterey upgrade.

Now when plugging in my iPhone via USB 3.0 or my Mouse, all that happens is the LED's on my mouse light up (but not the laser) or my iPhone charges, but won't connect to my Mac.

Oddly, both the HDMI and USB-C port on the hub continue to work as expected.

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately I don't have an Intel Mac to test this on, both machines tested at the place of purchase were M1 based Macs. My Mac, is also M1 based.

M1 with Big Sur = Working USB Hub

M1 with Monterey = Broken USB Hub with only HDMI and USB-C working on the hub, but no USB 3.0

It would be interesting to test with an Intel Mac on both Monterey and Big Sur, to see if the issues are consistent across both chipsets and OS's. The fact of the matter is though, my M1 based machine worked fine with this hub on Big Sur, and Monterey has changed that.

Just got the 12.2.1 Monterey update and my computer is now useless with my set up at work. USB C dock no longer works. I can't use my monitors, keyboard or mouse. If apple doesn't come up with a fix like by next week, I'm dumping my mac and getting a PC. I can't do what I do on a lap top alone. If I dump my macbook pro, I'll also dump my iphone. Apple... Please fix this issue. I have way too much money invested in you.

Does anybody have any news about this issue? Since I upgraded to Monterey, my hub (Apple multiport USB-C, HDMI and USB-A) stop working for USB-C. I went to Apple store and they change my hub for a brand new one and did not fix it. My cables are all from Apple. I have a Macbook Air 2020 M1, running Monterey 12.2.1, but I tested the hub in a iMac 27” Intel running Monterey 12.2.1 and the result is the same. With Big Sur I did not have this issue. And it is very, very annoying ….

Thanks!!

My hub and peripherals work most of the time now. I occasionally have to restart, or plug power cord into hub so enough ports are available for webcam to go directly to macBook (not through hub). AND... the functions of the Alt and Cmd keys will oddly flip on me! Example of this headeache: the back one word versus whole line of text changes now and then! Before Monterey, I didn't have to think of thi. Now I do.

I can not use USB-C on the hub with external drive or power. It is just dead. I can only use USB-A and HDMI from the hub. Same thing on iMac Intel. I have already tried different cables. Nothing. USB-C simply does not work. When I unplug the hub and use directly on the Macbook Air M1 or iMac Intel, everything works just fine. Hope next 12.3 Monterey fixes this annoying issue.

My problem was an old, but expensive GPS, which could not talk reliably to my MBP (M1X). Things improved when I used a 1.8 m long old USB cable but it was unreliable. For a completely different reason I needed a 10m USB 3.0 cable. I purchased a Alxum USB3.0 Extension Lead Cable 10M and I wondered if using that would make the GPS work reliably as the cable has an amplifier within it, so the GPS sees the cable amplifier and the MBP sees the cable amplifier. That works perfectly so I have a fix for my GPS. That particular cable is not cheap (although a lot cheaper than a new GPS) but I wonder if some of the lower cost USB cables with boosters would provide the same buffering solution and allow items that do not work straight into the MBP, work via the buffer amplifier?

I was forced to buy an M1 MacBook Air running Monterey because my 2017 MacBook Air had a catastrophic hardware failure. I was using a Logitech bluetooth mouse and keyboard with my old Mac, both of which have USB dongles. I bought an Anker hub and tried to use my Logitech keyboard with the Anker hub. My Mac failed to recognize the devices that used the dongles although I had no problem using my bluetooth printer. I thought the problem might be with the Anker hub so replaced it with the Belkin hub that was on the Apple web store (although no longer in stock -- had to buy elsewhere). The Apple technician I spoke with said her M1 Mac worked fine with that hub. Just opened it today, no luck. I've restarted, etc etc etc. Nothing. This is ridiculous...I was forced to spend $1000 to replace my 5-year-old Mac and now I can't use my mouse or external keyboard (both of which I need to sit at my desk and work). I'm beyond furious. Looks like I'm being forced to buy a new Apple keyboard and mouse since I can't make my old ones work at all. This is outrageous.

I have several USB hubs and USB docks (hub + HDMI + Ethernet + ...). All of these work fine on an Intel Mac still running Big Sur. Everything works fine and as expected. Yet they all fail in some way on a M1 Mac running Monterey.

USB-C ports work as expected (with any speed the hub supports over USB-C), so do HDMI ports and network ports and so on. Yet USB-A ports all fail unless they are USB 2.0 only ports, those in fact do work (USB 2 means 0.48 Gbit/s or 480 Mbit/s). But USB 3 ports, no matter if 3.2 Gen 1 (aka 3.1 Gen 1, aka 3.0; those with 5 Gbit/s) or 3.2 Gen 2 (aka 3.1 Gen 2; those with 10 Gbit/s) have power but no data transfer is possible via those ports (hardware is not detected at all, does not show up in System Information). Again, these ports work just fine on my other Mac.

I also have plain USB 3 hubs and if plug them in directly using a USB-C to USB-A adapter, they work as expected. The issue is only experienced with hubs/docks that have an USB-C connector and USB 3.x A-ports on the hub.

It plays no role if they are active or not. Active hubs have the issue regardless if self-powered or bus-powered. And for docks that can pass through power (USB-PD), it makes no difference if they are passing through power or not.

I have only one tiny dock, that has an USB-C connector, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 A-ports, one USB-C port for PD or as a normal port, and a HDMI port and this is the only one, where the USB 3 ports actually do work on Monterey. Even when powering via PD and using HDMI all at the same time. However, it isn't stable on Monterey. After several hours of use, sometimes connected devices disconnect or the dock starts to act strange and then I must unplug it form all power, wait and re-plug it to get it working again. Again, I cannot remember that this has ever happened on my Intel Mac with Big Sur.

There is no setting in the hardware tab for that, only speed, duplex, and MTU. And whether I set them manually or automatically makes no difference. Even with all of these set manually, USB Ethernet adapters (part of a dock or stand-alone) seem to work correctly for a while and suddenly stop working altogether. The system still shows them as connected in the preference pane (they are green and do have an IP address) but when trying to send any traffic over them, nothing is being sent out (as one can also see by the lights of the port). The only way to get Ethernet working again is then by disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter or the entire dock. Then they work again for a while. It's not related to the adapter being idle, actually the opposite is true: They stop working usually after a larger data transfer. If rarely used at all, they work way longer. Again, the adapter works perfectly reliably on PCs as well as Intel Macs running Big Sur.
