This means that you can reinstall macOS Catalina WITHOUT DESTROYING YOUR DATA and then install the previously downloaded Security Update 2021-006 Catalina which still not contains the HD4000 bug. To do so

  1. Boot your Mac with CMD+R pressed for the local recovery partition (CMD+ALT+R for recovery directly from Apple servers via internet if you don't have a recovery partition)
  2. Choose Reinstall MacOS
  3. Choose your system disk as target
  4. this takes approx. 30 minutes, maybe more depending on your harddisk
  5. After that SystemSettings offers several additional updates. DO NOT install the 007 Update! All others may (and should) be installed.
  6. Download "Security Update 2021-006 Catalina" here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2085 if not already done so.
  7. Install the just downloaded update

That's it. (Done so at Nov.27, 2021 on my Mac Mini Late 2012, Core i7 2.6 GHz QuadCore)

Now the most recent security problems (which are addressed by update 007) remain, but your Mac works as expected / as before.

That's a special compromise for a special situation. No more but no less. Hope that helps.

@ikrupp: You're right regarding the recommendations of Apple Support.

I did a fresh install of MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina on a second hard disk - with the same results. After installation of the "Security Update 2021-007 Catalina" OpenGL/WebGL is broken on Intel HD4000 graphics. Not a single piece of additional software was installed nor was the initial admin account modified in any way. It was the most clean (current) Catalina installation one can think of.

What you have done with the fresh install is a pretty definitive test. I can confirm that the Intel HD5000 graphics does work (with a 2013 MacBook Air) with this update, but it's a slightly newer product than the HD4000.

I think you should make a bug report to Apple with the description of the test you did with the fresh install and your 2012 Mac with the HD4000.

Hi steve626,

Sorry if I missed this above - I already opened a ticket at Apple Support. Together with the support engineer we found that the error does not occur in Save Mode. But I told them about my "Clean Install Test" and presented it to them in a live session.

So Apple is aware of the problem and is currently investigating and verifying it.

The idea behind my participation in this thread was to encourage additional people to involve Apple Support as well so that Apple gets a better idea of the severity of the problem.

I think you didn't do you a favor. ;-)

That reads as if you went back in time to a point before the installation of "Security Update 2021-007 Catalina". Of course that works and (kind of) "solves" the problem with the HD4000 graphics driver. But you miss the latest security updates!

That's not a good idea. Don't connect such a machine to the internet. The latest security issues are of course the first ones, that an external attacker tries out - the chance that they are still not fixed is highest...

I can only strongly recommend to reinstall all the latest security updates - the mentioned graphics problems are no reason to leave your machine insecure.

No, according to Apple Support that won't be fixed.

I just got a callback from Apple Support. They said that my Mac Mini (Late 2012) has the status "vintage" and won't be supported any more. I guess that's true for all Macs with this HD4000 GPU... :-(

I argued that the OS (Catalina) is still supported but they responded that the underlying graphics hardware isn't.

This is not sustainable but nevertheless I must admit that even until that point this MacMini is the longest lasting Computer I ever had. 9 Years usable period is quite much for a computer.

Plex APP broken too, Catalina running in a OS supported MacBookPro8,1, tried reinstalling the app and cleaning old files, but it continues crashing. Looks like Apple messed it up (again). Either they consider the computer vintage or not they declared it Catalina compatible so they should provide an installer with a fixed driver or a previous working version. They cannot break a working computer just because.

Maybe is as easy as going on my Mojave boot and grabbing the old driver files from there.

PS: by the way, first post, hello everyone!

Let's Apple know what some of us think.

Why mess with old HD4000 graphics machines? Do we deserve broken graphics after almost 10 years of flawless performance? I know everything now is related to their Apple Silicon, which is great... But please don't sabotage your most loyal costumers to force us buying your newest computers... We'll buy them anyways sooner or later but we'd like to retire our old computers in working condition as backup units and not throw them away as malfunctioning or crippled units.

I am using new MacBook Pros, but I also, like you, have some "vintage" Macs. For instance, a 2008 iMac (with a built in DVD superdrive), 2010 MacBook Air, and 2013 MacBook Air. In fact worse, than "vintage," Apple classifies all these 2013 and older Macs as "obsolete" and no longer supports them nor stocks parts for them. I found this out when I needed a new battery and SSD for that 2013 Mac, but I was ultimately able to get excellent parts from OWC.

These "vintage" or "obsolete" Macs continue to run great for me. But the 2008 can't go past 10.11, the 2010 can't go past 10.13, and the 2013 can't go past Big Sur. Ultimately, one must accept the security shortcomings of "obsolete" equipment or get a new computer. Being able to go all the way up to Catalina minus the very last security update is not too bad.
