I can easily share this point of view. :-)

I just found a workaround so that Security Update 2021-007 Catalina can be installed... minus 'AppleIntelHD4000GraphicsGLDriver.bundle'. :

As already told I have a clean install of Catalina on a second Harddisk. I installed 'Security Update 2021-006 Catalina' onto this HD. This includes "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelHD4000GraphicsGLDriver.bundle" Version 14.7.18

(This is the last working version of this bundle. Update 007 installs version 14.7.20, which is obviously broken)

I copied this bundle (and only this) to my primary System with 'Security Update 2021-007 Catalina' installed.

After a reboot to my primary system everything works again as expected, all WebGL-Pages can be loaded. :-)

This has the advantage that 'Security Update 2021-007 Catalina' is still installed, so there's no annoying reminder to install new updates from the system preferences. And in fact all Security Updates are installed - only with the exception of the GLDriver bundle.

I think that's currently the least possible violation of system security.

This means that you can reinstall macOS Catalina WITHOUT DESTROYING YOUR DATA and then install the previously downloaded Security Update 2021-006 Catalina which still not contains the HD4000 bug. To do so

  1. Boot your Mac with CMD+R pressed for the local recovery partition (CMD+ALT+R for recovery directly from Apple servers via internet if you don't have a recovery partition)
  2. Choose Reinstall MacOS
  3. Choose your system disk as target
  4. this takes approx. 30 minutes, maybe more depending on your harddisk
  5. After that SystemSettings offers several additional updates. DO NOT install the 007 Update! All others may (and should) be installed.
  6. Download "Security Update 2021-006 Catalina" here: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2085 if not already done so.
  7. Install the just downloaded update

That's it. (Done so at Nov.27, 2021 on my Mac Mini Late 2012, Core i7 2.6 GHz QuadCore)

Now the most recent security problems (which are addressed by update 007) remain, but your Mac works as expected / as before.

That's a special compromise for a special situation. No more but no less. Hope that helps.

It's working again! 7 weeks after introducing Catalina Security Update 2021-007, Apple releases 2021-2008 which appears to fix the OpenGL bug. Although Apple didn't address it specifically, Suddenly everything using OpenGL is working again on my MacBook Pro(13-inch, Mid2012) with Intel HD Graphics 4000.

Starry Night and Stellarium planetarium software, Google street view and WebGL in Safari are suddenly working again after I installed the update. Considering my Mac was less than 5 years old when the bug was introduced and that it is listed as compatible with Catalina, this makes way more sense that Apple has fixed the issue, even if they never acknowledged it.

Hi,

the problem is your GPU (Intel HD4000).

Security Update 2021-007 Catalina broke the Intel Graphics driver.

Look into 'Console.app' for CrashReports from your application.

There you should find the following section:

[...]
Graphics kernel error: 0xfffffffb

Thread 0 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

8 com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHD4000GraphicsGLDriver	0x00007fff29301aa6 intelSubmitCommands + 187
[...]

I opened a ticket on Apple Support - feel free to do so as well ;-)

@emjoro: Where is your problem?

  • You boot into the recovery console using CMD+R while switching on your machine
  • Then re-install macOS Catalina
  • After reboot with the fresh installed Catalina, 'Softwareupdate' offers you additional updates for Catalina
  • Do NOT install "Security Update 2021-007 Catalina" (but all other offers of course)
  • Download "Security Update 2021-006 Catalina" and install it afterwards

You have now an OS without the faulty version of the HD4000GL-Driver - but you also miss the security fixes of the 007-package.

You have to decide yourself if it's the right way to do so.

BTW: I have Windows 10 under Parallels Desktop and there I can view any WebGL-Pages without the slightest problem ;-)

(That's a bit embarrassing for a Mac of course ;-)

I found a workaround for my mid 2012 macbook pro using the application gfxCardStatus. The workaround should work for any mac with two graphics cards which would be classified as follows:

Integrated: Intel HD Graphics 4000

Discrete: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M

The app (gfxCardStatus) allows me to select between the integrated or the discrete graphics card or use dynamic switching (a combination of both cards depending on what apps I'm running).

So in my case I set gfxCardStatus (when running it has a menu bar icon that lets you select card) to use the discrete card when I need to run an app that was previously crashing - in my case the crashing app was 'Transmit' (my main FTP client). Which now seems to run fine when relying only on the discrete card setting. Once I'm done using Transmit, I've been switching the gfxCardStatus back to dynamic switching which means it'll switch back and forth between the two cards.

So far so good. Hope this helps a few of you with a dual card setup.

Just a workaround: managed to replace AppleIntelHD4000Graphics.kext with the one from previous update (SecUpd2021-006Catalina.dmg) and magically lot of apps are now running fine (google earth, krita, etc etc). You have to extract the driver folder from the update package, then disable SIP, then replace the kext with proper permissions and rebuild the kext cache, then reboot and re-enable SIP if everything works. 14.7.18 below is the old one.

Good news from Apple, which has fixed the bugs introduced with the previous SecUpdate for Catalina 2021-007 with version 2021-008. It took six weeks (and hundreds of complaints) to be able to use Google Earth and other third-party software again. The driver for the Intel HD4000 graphics card is functional again with Open GL. It is possible to use Firefox again to open pages that require OpenGL.

As usual, Apple has not acknowledged the damage caused to its users by its programming errors. Nor has it fixed the problems introduced with SecUpdate 2021-007.

Many lessons could be learned from this new adventure: Apple's quality assurance is once again flawed; communication with users is clearly insufficient or even contemptuous; security updates that can break your system at any time and prevent you from using your favorite software cannot be trusted.

My personal advice: if you have space on your hard disk, make a 30 GB partition on which you install MacOS in order to test each update. This way you will avoid wasting a lot of time and you will be able to protect yourself against bad surprises...

Have a great day

Denis

@ikrupp: You're right regarding the recommendations of Apple Support.

I did a fresh install of MacOS 10.15.7 Catalina on a second hard disk - with the same results. After installation of the "Security Update 2021-007 Catalina" OpenGL/WebGL is broken on Intel HD4000 graphics. Not a single piece of additional software was installed nor was the initial admin account modified in any way. It was the most clean (current) Catalina installation one can think of.

What you have done with the fresh install is a pretty definitive test. I can confirm that the Intel HD5000 graphics does work (with a 2013 MacBook Air) with this update, but it's a slightly newer product than the HD4000.

I think you should make a bug report to Apple with the description of the test you did with the fresh install and your 2012 Mac with the HD4000.

As has been pointed out numerous times there is no need to wait for a patch from Apple. You can restore your system to full functionality by reinstalling Catalina minus the 2021-007 security update. If you use Time Machine to maintain a full backup it is relatively simple to restore your system to the point just before the faulty update was applied. Of course you won’t be protected from the security issues this update fixed but you will have a fully functional Mac.
