Why can’t I buy more than 2 TB on iCloud ?

I recently went with my partner to a large apple store in the center of Rome made an appointment to ask the “genius” why we can’t buy more storage on iCloud.  The very disappointing answer was that there’s no way around it.

Both he and I are faithful users of apple and have owned almost every iphone model as it was ever available - faithfully upgrading each time.

These phones get bigger and bigger storage capacity  wise, and yet the iCloud storage capacity hasn’t grown in years from 2 TB!

Indeed the new iPhone 13 has 1 TB of data on it, so, what’s going on ?

  • What will happen when he have exhausted it all ? Will we loose our photos and videos which we need for our work and our livelihood?

  • first off please don’t suggest we go through all out stored content and edit it down.  We have looked into it.  It is NOT user friendly to delete many iCloud photos at a time. It’s a huge time waste for both of us to sit there deleting every image or video one by one online.  It would be like a drop in the ocean.
  • Other backups of other previous   phones  - as Photograohers and content makers these are of two past phones we still use as backup phones and each still has its own photos and videos independent and different from the others phone’s backups.  So they are needed - so please don’t suggest deleting those.
  • Creating a new iCloud, I once did that already when I ran out of space the first iCloud ID I had and it’s a nightmare to figure out what is on what iCloud.
  • desperate, and willing to pay for more storage We looked into Apple + (not that we use the services but only for the 4TB of data it says you can get out of the subscription) however the apple store genius informed us it wouldn’t help because this 4 TB is to be shared among a family and is capped and can’t be used for just one iCloud account. (One user can’t use the 4 TB she said  this seems ILLOGICAL - but I called the 1800 Cupertino apple support line and the rep i got also told me he was unsure apple + would give me 4 TB for one iCloud account !
  • They both suggest we subscribe to it and see, and if it doesn’t work then as for a refund?!! Can’t apple answer  this more clearly ?

So what are we to do ? Any ideas ?

Has anyone been able to get more storage on ONE account ?

Also what happens once the max 2 TB is reached ?

Thanks so much in advance !

You can get 4 TB storage. There isn't a 4 TB plan as such, you have to do it by having a subscription to Apple One and buying more storage.

"Upgrade to iCloud+" --> https://support.apple.com/HT201318

"Apple One

With Apple One, you can choose a subscription plan that includes 50GB, 200GB, or 2TB of iCloud storage. If you need more iCloud storage, you can buy more for a total of up to 4TB."

Cost depends upon what kind of Apple One plan you get.

You'll have to assemble all this information using these links:

The simple reason you cannot buy more than 2TB is because Apple does not offer any subscription plan larger than that. They could sell whatever plans they wish to market, but for now at least, that is the largest single plan they offer.

And if you're truly synchronizing data in iCloud that you "need for our work and our livelihood" without any other alternative backup or archive, you're being very foolish in my opinion. iCloud is not designed for large scale commercial use. It is a personal storage service. For one thing, other than your iPhone or iPad backup in iCloud, nothing else in iCloud is a true backup. It is merely the primary repository for the sync'd copies of things you have on your devices. Because it is sync'd in real time as you work on that data on your devices, it is NOT a true backup nor an archive.

So regardless of how much space you have in iCloud you should be independently backing that data up somewhere else as well. All it takes is anyone with hands on your unlocked device to wipe data from all your devices (people post here of their kids doing that sort of accidental erasure all the time).

All my photos are backed up regularly to a computer, which in turn has three alternative backups of its entire contents as well (one on an external hard drive kept in a fire safe in-between updates). I backup all my iOS and iPadOS devices in iCloud, but also periodically in Finder on my Mac.

Trusting data you claim is vital or irreplaceable to a single online source, which inherently is NOT a backup source, is not a secure way to treat important data.

Hello GYPSY_BELLE ~ I like easy solutions as well. The easy way for me is using an iXpand flash drive. It makes it easy to download from my iPhone and transfer to other external storage. I however only have my personal pictures to be concerned with. I would urge you to use as many other options as possible as I have a family member who lost years of pictures to an accidental erasure and the loss was devastating at the time.

Hi Katana ! I would love an alternative solution . Are the services you use easy - for example my most pressing tag is to upload about 200GB of photos from an iPhone 8 X (the whole phone ) to a safe place. I had never made it upload to iCloud photos fearing it would take me over the edge of 2 TB . What alternative do you recommend that can make it easy to upload all photos - that’s a lot ... I don’t want to sit there and upload one small group by one small group like Dropbox because I always loose track what last 20 or 40 photos I did ... anything painless and easy ? Kindly advise . I appreciate your time !

thanks
