Songs View Jumping to Random Spots After Action

Since the update to Monterey I've been experiencing some weird behavior when adding songs to a playlist (or editing info of a song/album). It seems as soon as Apple Music is done making changes, it just randomly decides to jump to a different spot in my current view.

Example: In the Library - Songs view, I went to an album by the artist "Dave". I selected the 12 songs from the album, two-finger click, Add to Last Playlist, and the Songs view jumps down to Jeezy. Do the same thing for a Turnstile album and it jumps down to Various Artists.

All of my playlists are in the "Songs" view (because the default Playlist view is absolutely worthless), so I cannot say whether this happens in other views.

Another, slightly less annoying bug, is that when using the keyboard to jump to the artist you want (in the example above typing "Dave") the first matching song is highlighted at the bottom of the view, instead of the top as it's been since... forever.

Am I the only experiencing/annoyed by these two bugs?

2 issues will rectify itself if you turn off 'Sync Library' in Music > Preferences > General

  1. No more auto jumping in Songs playlist after any editing action
  2. The Now Playing menu bar will behave as expected; as in it will show the playing time and remaining time & the scrubber will show accordingly where you are in the music track

As soon as you turn it back on, these 2 issues return.

As I look over the list of people with this same problem (‘jumping’) music files, it appears that no one from Apple has jumped in on this discussion nor have any one of those responders who are only to eager and are able to help with assorted challenges with Apple software.

That situation tells me several things that have already been mentioned in various over the last several months of this discussion: 1) Apple has no desire to fix this issue because 2) they do not know how to fix it since moving from Intel to M1 may have reduced those familiar with coding to fewer capable personnel or 3) it is too big of a problem for them to handle other than start back in square one.

There is the possibility that, other than high-end professional production, Apple is moving away from a user-friendly music app for collectors (listeners and fans) at the desktop level, focusing only only iPhones and iPads. The last “Apple events” have been much more about the sizzle than the steak. I am remembering some of the jokes about Windows some years back... .

I am not going to jump ship here, as I have been an Apple fan both at home and in the classroom (in music classes) for along time.

It would be nice if someone would or could join in to help solve this issue. I like a bunch of others am beginning to feel like a Cubs fan...’Wait ’til next year!'

Hm the jumping is back after latest upgrade. :-(

I think Music app is the worst on Mac. Zero quality control!? What is happening Apple? Don´t you want people to subscribe to Music. Should we all use Spotify instead? Please fix this annoying bugs?

I assume the problem lies in the html5 GUI in Music app. Call med old, but I miss the "older" GUI which was not html based.

Yep, still zero change with the latest 12.3 update. So incredibly frustrating. I'm losing hope with every update now.

2019 16" intel chip here.

Thanks for the arrow up work-around; even more efficient than the pause/play method.

Turning off the wifi toggle actually did work for me too but then i'm unable to use Airplay & my HomePods which is how I initially listen and rate/delete/sort my music.

It has to be a bug that involves updating with iCloud or something, it's like it reconfigures and jumps your selection every time you edit/rate/delete a song.

Same here (MacBook Pro mid-2015 running 12.2.1)

For the longest time it was possible (and useful) at the top of a column in Songs View to type the first couple letters of an artist, an album or a song and be transported to the library section starting with those letters. No more.

Also, attempts to scroll down within a column in Songs View (eg. artist) often are met with the view popping back to the top of said column. Weird.

A fix is needed and fast.

Having exactly the same issue. Have spoken to Apple on numerous occasions (about three hours over six phone calls) and they seem as bewildered as myself. Very frustrating. I'm a dj and I have a lot of songs so I need to be able to find duplicates or mixes of individual tracks quickly - I can no longer do that without the whole thing jumping to some random point in my collection. Before I would highlight a song, enter title and all songs of that title would be listed at the top. Not anymore, at first it would appear at the bottom but now not even that.

It has recently got worse. When I delete a song or put a track in a playlist it does the jumping business again. It's made Apple Music pretty useless for me.

Monterey 12.2.1 and still very much have this issue. Huge iTunes Match library of both ripped and purchased songs that Apple Music seems to constantly struggle with, so I assume that's the problem. Very frustrating — currently hitting pause/play twice to get back to what's playing when I'm rating songs. Constantly taking me to the end of my entire playlist. At least I never suffered the lost ratings bug that others describe.

If networking/wifi's the problem, then clearly all Apple needs to do is make refreshes far less intrusive (or far less frequent). I suspect they're trying to constantly sync to the cloud as if we all have tiny music libraries, and as if no one ever uses iTunes Match, because either of those would rapidly defeat any constant syncing. Many of us multitask while working with or listening to music and can't possibly turn off networking — sadly the solution would be worse than the problem.

I have switched to Rekordbox and will not go back now. So much faster and easier to scrub and move between files as there is a wave form for each song in the playlist. Even without the jumping, Apple music lags most times I try and move a song to a folder even on a brand new pumped up MacBook Pro 16. . Seriously give Rekord box a try, this from a 19 year iTunes user!
