Can I change login screen with OS Monterey

Since I upgraded to OS Monterey the login screen after I start my laptop shows the purple shades that are literally called "Monterey"

I really don't like the colors! Looking through system preferences I don't see a way to change the image.

Icon yes, but not the screen? Is there something I'm missing? How can I change the image?

I *really* don't like the colors!

The pre-login boot wallpaper now loads from a sealed snapshot. It is not editable.

macOS today operates by separating the system files and the data files into two totally separate volumes. The system files are "sealed". It is, essentially, a read-only volume which Apple distributes. Since the hard disk is encrypted before you login, the computer does not have access to anything other than a little metadata associated with the accounts (username and a small icon and that's about it). Once you enter a password, the data volume can be decrypted. The computer then essentially "merges" the system files and data files together in real time like a zipper through a series of firmlinks.

macOS now boots in a state that is always fresh and identical. Only once you login do all the changes you've made (including wallpaper) become visible to the system.

I have the same problem, except it's a different wallpaper (the light variant of the "Chroma Red" wallpaper). I tried the "UUID\lockscreen.png" thing, but the file was already there and already set to my current (different) wallpaper. Tried changing it anyway, but the login wallpaper is still stubbornly set to that "Chroma Red" wallpaper.

It must be cached somewhere on the drive, but I haven't been able to find where. (I never even set this as my wallpaper, so it's a mystery where/when this was chosen in the first place.)

With all due respect to "APPLE," users should not have to be figuring out workarounds to solve this desire to change the login screen on their respective Apple devices, right? There should be no questions whether you are in Vault mode or not; it should just work. However, it does not!

Then to leave the problem in the hands of the apple discussion/community is a copout.

Thanks for trying to help. I did follow the instructions up to 59 seconds, but I did not see any "Advanced Options" on the Users & Groups preferences. I did find the UUID on the disk utility, but the rest of the instructions were complicated and I gave up. I guess I can live with the Monterey screen; it does not last long! Thanks again.

Hi all,

I'm curious myself as to how the default login background photo is selected on macOS. I'm on an M1 MacBook Air running macOS Monterey (12.1), with FileVault enabled. My login screen background is automatically set to the light-mode Monterey graphic (pink and purple shades).

Does anyone else get a different image when they have FileVault enabled (in System Preferences -> Security and Privacy) and they restart their Mac? I'm particularly interested in what happens on an M1 iMac and on the new 14" and 16" MacBook Pros.

This info could help in finding out how macOS chooses which background to display, and how to change it.

Apple was founded on user choice... the computer for the rest of us. I’m a Boomer,so I go waaaaaay back, and I’ve only ever used Apple, but now this embarrassing, hideous, boot screen has been locked in and I am sure there will be no change because we are now to be told what we will accept and how we will operate our devices. I feel betrayed and quite sad that AppleSoft has turned its back on its founding principles.

After all, and complain about it myself since Big Sur (same ugly screen, less complained, just different colors….), I admit I concur to what you are raising here. True, it’s minor compared to fact I always need to wait about 9 months so many programs I use finally comply….

Nevertheless, even though “art” is a very subjective matter, if security is involved in that decision to “remove” capability to change that screen, it is the second year Apple is providing such an ugly design. Never wondered about modifying Catalina or previous default screens…

Pardon me, but I don't understand what the big deal is with the login screen. I mean... how long are you staring at it?? Log in, and it's gone! Are the colors that offending to you? How often do you log out? I guess if you have multiple users on the same computer it could happen often, but as the only user on any of my computers, I can deal with looking at the login screen for the 4 or 5 seconds it takes me to log in. Sorry... I'll step off my soap box now. 😀

This thread has been going on for a while about this topic so, while it doesn't bother you, it obviously bothers other people, myself included. As for myself, I really don't like those colors and since I have to reboot my workstation often for work, I'd like to be able to change them considering how much I paid for my laptop. I bought and meticulously applied a really nice woodgrain skin for my MacBook that I love and yet after a reboot and after I go for a coffee there is my bright pink and purple computer waiting for me. Here I thought everyone is for personal preference these days right. Macs are supposed to be the "artists computer" yet I can't change something super simple like a login screen that I am forced to look at 25 times a day.
