Manual control of optimized charging and max battery charge level

Thank you Apple for letting us know that charging to %100 may age our batteries prematurely. How about letting us manually specify when to charge the battery past %80 then?

Optimized Battery Charging a great feature in theory but it never seems to kick in for me. My laptop is plugged in 24/7 in my recording studio and I only once saw a message saying that optimized charging was activated because the laptop was rarely used on battery. Similarly, my iPhone 13 is always left plugged in while I sleep has never gone in to optimized charging mode.

I think it would make sense to give users some manual control over this functionality (like what Tesla does) rather than relying exclusively on AI.

thanks! 🙏

A feature introduced into Monterey & Big Sur was to preserve the number of Full Battery Cycles - there was an Algorithm coded into the macOS. It is perfectly Normal for Big Sur to Pause / Suspend charging the battery beyond 80% and hold it at that level. One can nudge / over-ride this by clicking the Battery Icon on Desktop Top Bar and allow charging beyond 80%. From observations, it will Pause / Suspend again once reading 90%. Same procedure to over-ride and will charge to 100%

Not sure if you understand my point. The issue is not that I want to override Optimized Charging. The issue is that it never works and I think we should be able to manually limit battery charging to %80 rather than relying on an AI to determine when to change the battery fully.

Let the MacOS manage the battery and charging system. It can do a much better job than you can manually. Leave your computer plugged in when convenient to do so. Neither the computer nor battery will be damaged by leaving it plugged in. A side affect of leaving it plugged in is that it reduces the rate of accumulation of battery cycles.

The real point is Apple has decided the OS will work that way.

They make the computers.

They make the OS that it run.

They make the rules.

All the wishing under the stars and heaven is not going to change a thing.

A Learned Contributor has already mentioned - send Apple your feedback.

That would be more constructive and proactive.

I did leave feedback 👍

If anyone knows of a tool which can manually limit battery charge I'd love to hear about it. And no, most of the time I can not turn off or unplug my laptop(s) every night. I mean... it was cool of Apple to warn us about overcharging but I do wish the tool they built to prevent this wasn't exclusively controlled by AI.

Your computer and battery will not "overcharge". The system can control charging and power management better than you can manually and better than any third party app.
