After MAC OS 12 Monterey update that System Data Folder swelled to incredible 320 GB

I noticed after my update to MAC OS 12 Monterey that my System Data Folder swelled to an incredible 320 GB, which is 1/3 of the FULL HD. Before the update (was running BIG Sur), the Folder was called Other and was only about 40-50 GB. Any suggestions? It eats disk space unnecessarily. Now also the backups etc are huge. Would appreciate any input. Best, Dino

It turned out to have nothing to do with the system for me. Fortnite was hiding its content in the system folder. I went into Terminal and drilled down. I started with

  du -hcd2 /System/Volumes 2> /dev/null

which looks in the given folder (/System/Volumes) and lists all the folders under it and the folders those contain, and the amount of data in each. I found the biggest of those and iterated.

du -hcd2 /System/Volumes/Data/Users 2> /dev/null

Until the culprit was revealed. So, I deleted the old, old version of Fortnite that runs on Apple. Ironically, this is one of our kids' macbooks, and they just wanted space to install xcode to get ready for Fortnite Creative 3.0, but I don't think they'll miss 2-year-old Fortnite.

Just to be pedantic, I'll explain the command. 'du' shows how much disk is used. '-' means options, h means use 'human readable' notation (GB, MB, KB), c means print a summary amount and d2 means go two levels deep. That's just so I don't get too much data to navigate. The '2>/dev/null' bit at the end discards error messages.

I hope this helps!

I am curious what you mean by command shift? the only keyboard shortcut I am familiar with to show the hidden "Library" folder is the Option key.

In my Library, the Application Support folder is what I am thinking is causing my System Data to show a high number, but this appears to be the fact that I have Spotify and have downloaded all the music to the Mac, and this is where Spotify saves your downloaded music (user/library/app support), which is listed as "System Data" in the system information window.

I have a similar situation. In my case, it appears that it is including in "System Data" my entire User folder, as those files don't appear anywhere else in the "About This Mac" Storage tab. Interestingly, if I click "Manage..." next to "Documents" it says "Zero KB", and yet I can browse all of the files which are clearly there.

Edit: I can see in the above screenshots that "sadingeldein", "rechtoriks" and "leciawo" also have the same "Zero KB" reported size for Documents.

Me too.

Bought an expensive m1x MacBook to replace my 2015 running big sur. 500gb on a 1tb. Tried to migrate to the new MacBook running Monterey. Migration assistant failed saying I need 1.2 tb on the new 1tb MacBook.

Senior advisor told me to upgrade my old MacBook to Monterey. Swelled it to 980gb. Apple took images and promised to call me back. No call back. They sent me to genius bar and closed the case. "genius" told me to replace it with a 4tb machine to be able to accommodate my 500gb footprint from big sur.

Apple support refused to tell me their analysis.

Huge coverup by Apple. Apple's gonna pay.

Interesting, so how did you delete the folder in question? Also, the folder I have has Data in the Volumes under the System.

You hold down the Option Key and select Library from the Go menu in Finder. Look for a Fortnite folder there or in Application Support or possible somewhere else in your home folder.

As I already stated, the Data volume is mounted there and contains your home folder which you can find by going to /Users or Go > Home. The Finder shows the Data volume as if it is part of the startup drive.
