No images in Icon view with Monterey

Since updating to 12.0.1 Monterey my 2017 27” Retina iMac no longer shows images in Icon view for all image file formats, pdf, and video files. psd and rtf files appear fine. After a restart several image files acquired an image in Icon view, but the majority have not.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I need a fix because I switch into Icon view when I sort images, pdfs and videos.

So i found this elsewhere and it worked for me:

"Open up Activity Monitor, search for a process called "com.apple.quicklook.ThumbnailsAgent," force quit that process, restart Finder"

Not sure if it's a permanent fix, but it's not onerous to do when necessary until Apple fix it.

Hey everyone!

Just a question for isolation purposes:

Are all of the documents not showing the correct icon preview on either Desktop or Documents exclusively?

If so, could you check to see if “Desktop and Documents” is enabled in System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud Drive > Options?

Or likewise in a new Finder window under iCloud Drive? (Instead of being under “Favorites”?

I was just wondering if the same appears in locations other than iCloud designated locations, such as “Documents”?

If so, this doesn’t necessarily mean an OS issue, but rather an issue with how the OS is communicating with iCloud, etc. that may make a huge difference in the proper steps to take.

Not to mention knowing if the same occurs in a newly created “Test” admin account both with and without signing into any accounts is a great test and doesn’t take too much time. Cheers.

Restarting Finder, restarting the Mac and Safe Mode offer only temporary relief from this problem. New images, in fact new files of any sort, do not show a preview. I can confirm that the preview image is there when doing a get info, as well as in list view. It also appears in gallery view - but the images across the bottom in gallery view are generic as well.

This applies to all files in the finder - except screen shots. I suppose my only option at this point is to revert to a previous version of the os.

I updated to Monterey Version 12.1 last night and after restarting my blank icons for files now have correct images.

BUT, the problem persists. New files all fail to acquire the correct icon. So 12.1 does not fix the problem. I now understand the problem is rather widespread, so let up hope Apple comes up with a patch. Restarting every morning just to fix yesterday’s files is getting old really fast.

I just noticed that cmd+click in Safari isn’t opening a new tab for me either. cmnd+T is working however.

So a clean install of Monterey doesn’t solve the problem of the missing file icons; good to know. I did a restart this morning however and all existing files now have the correct icons. New files after the restart still do not have icons.

Never had I had to restart so many times (once a day) just to see file icons.

same issue here, just bought a brand new pro max, 64gb ram, monterey, 8tb drive, to the tune of over 7K and all the icons on my desktop look like this...

extremely annoying to say the least after spending this much on the best laptop you can buy (in the Mac realm)...

at this point it must be a bug that will be fixed with a patch rollup, hopefully apple follows this thread.

Safe mode did not solve the problem. Restarting the Mac fixes existing icons - or Quick Look previews. New files have no preview. The OSXDaily terminal command again - only a temporary fix to existing files. Restarting the Finder does the same - existing files acquire a Quick Look image - new files the problem returns.

I suspect at this point my only option is to revert to the previous version of the os - not something I am looking forward to...

Yes, this was one of the first things I checked. “Show icon preview" is checked for all folders.

I recently updated to macOS Monterey 12.2, and there has been no change. Previews for existing files will show only after a restart. New files created after a restart show only generic icons for all file types. This problem persists on all drives, including Dropbox.

This only started happening after updating to Monterey. This Mac is currently macOS Monterey 12.2 and the problem persists.

Yes, I reset SMC and NVRAM/PRAM - no change at all.

I am holding off on reinstalling the OS, or even downgrading to the previous version, although I see no advantage to staying with Monterey. This machine is very stable with all apps, and there are absolutely no other problems - it just doesn’t display image previews for any files - unless I restart the computer, and then it starts all over again.

Thank you everyone for this thread but...none of this worked for me. And then I realized that the files it wasn't working for are files that are stored in the cloud and not locally on my iMac drive. So...does anyone have a solution for this problem for iCloud files? So check out the screen shot I attached. As you can see I can see the icon image for the files that are stored on my local drive but I can't see the icon image for the files that are stored in the cloud. I can't believe Apple let this problem persist for so long. I'm a photographer and it's a HUGE time waster. I'm actually seriously thinking about switching back to Windows because of my inability to quickly find a pic (out of hundreds and hundreds of pics). Apple, are you even listening???
