Since updating to 12.0.1 Monterey my 2017 27” Retina iMac no longer shows images in Icon view for all image file formats, pdf, and video files. psd and rtf files appear fine. After a restart several image files acquired an image in Icon view, but the majority have not.
Is anyone else experiencing this? I need a fix because I switch into Icon view when I sort images, pdfs and videos.

So i found this elsewhere and it worked for me:
"Open up Activity Monitor, search for a process called "com.apple.quicklook.ThumbnailsAgent," force quit that process, restart Finder"
Not sure if it's a permanent fix, but it's not onerous to do when necessary until Apple fix it.

I have the same problem on MacBook Pro 15" when creating new files (older files are OK).
A restart temporarily solve the problem.
Hope an update will fin the problem !
Apple personnel are not here. We're all end users like yourself. Tell Apple about the problem with the system via Feedback - macOS - Apple.
I have not had any issues with previous versions of macOS. The only ‘third party’ apps I am running are Adobe apps, Dropbox and a VPN. The VPN does not boot on startup. I have ben running these apps with no problems whatsoever ever since 2017, and through several ‘versions’ of macOS.
So, to whom do I turn for support with this issue? Are you saying that I need to reinstall my operating system?
Re: brandonpeter comments, I also have the same problem - icons of images not showing after updating to Monterey. This is a huge time sink when trying to quickly find images. I have not had time to try safe mode but restarting the finder is not a solution. Any suggestions appreciated.
I have been having the same issue and several hours on line with Apple support to try and rectify the issue but it still persists. This is causing a real issue as they are also not loading correctly to transfer from computer - usb - on to projector as the image is not showing! Bloomin nightmare and never ever had this issue previously. Worst thing I could have been advised to do by and advisor, downloading Monterey!!! :-((((
A restart seems to temporarily solve the problem. New images - in fact all file types - will exhibit the same problem. For me, this seems to be the case regardless of where I save my files: on the desktop, in a folder on my desktop, to my Documents folder, and to my external drives.
Restarting in Safe Mode produces the same result as a regular restart - a temporary fix only.
Oddly enough, files saved to Dropbox, or any of my cloud services are fine - go figure!
I've been following the posts with recommendations with safe mode and so forth and was too busy to do anything but then yesterday the problem suddenly resolved itself with jpegs and icons now appearing as normal. Not sure if there was an update to the OS or what but what a hassle that was.
Well the same happened to me on my Mac The 2011. So I got the m1pro (Doesn't really matter what chip it could be m1.m1Pro,M1max) It resolved But then I got my new Mac and tested on my 2011 Mac You will need some patches for Montery(Works) then the some icons can some don't It depends how to computer handles it ,Including the Files you have.
Same problem here. I even did a clean install of Monterey, but no luck. Also, ever since upgrading to Moneterey, cmd+click to open a link in a new tab no longer works in Safari. The clean install did not fix this either.
Here's some food for thought regarding public VPNs: unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer, school or bank's servers, they are useless from a privacy standpoint. I too am having this very issue. It is extremely frustrating and the activity monitor / finder relaunch did not work for me. As a presenter it looks unprofessional to have a desktop riddled with generic icons.
@BrandonPeter: Thank you for this solution ... even if it is temporary! I began experiencing the very same problem with image file icons disappearing a number of days ago. I don't recall if the problem was due to updating to Monterey 12.1 or what, but it has been very annoying. I have over 5,000 images -- mainly PNGs and JPGs -- made in Adobe Photoshop, scattered all over my hard drive. Whether on the Desktop, or in folders in list view or icon view, the icon previews suddenly all disappeared, which really slows down my work flow. So I tried your simple solution, and it worked! I haven't restarted my iMac yet, or made any new images since following your instructions, but I hope the solution holds. Clearly, this must be a Monterey issue, I would think. Thanks again Brandon!
This is a major issue for many people. Met with the usual apathy it appears from Apple - reinstalls and other suggestions. Why can't Apple just release an OS without these issues? I'll not be upgrading - why put yourself through such a headache. Given that Macs are used intensively with images, pretty appalling.
Brand new Studio. It's happening to me and this is a nightmare. Nuking ThumnailsAgent was only a temporary fix.
I see there's a Terminal command floating around but wow - how is it necessary to resort to this?
I am also having this issue. New files on the Desktop are not showing the images, whereas the items that were on the desktop prior to the update are showing the images. Not sure how to solve.
