Tap-to-click issue on MacOS 12.0.1

So I've been having this very annoying issue in Monterey that happens randomly when I tap to click. Sometimes the occurrence is not registered and the click is 'wasted', like clicking in vain. This is so frustrating and happens so often that I'm really considering going back to BigSur because of it (even though I'm loving Monterey so far, except for this bug). I saw a few people mentioning they're having this issue but not as many people as I thought there would be. I have this happening with my M1 MBA.

Is anybody else experiencing this with their MacBooks or magic trackpads?

I resolved my issue on my M1 MB Air by selecting "Light" in the Trackpad "Point & Click" section.

It was driving me up the wall, I upgraded my work MB Air first, dealt with this issue and then upgraded my home MB Air M1, thinking I'd just deal with it until Apple figured it out.

Turns out it was just the setting in the aforementioned preference.

It seems not at present. Lots of tinkering with settings but with little to no success. Have been advised to wait for next software update by senior support staff. Actually went to a store and had a play around with the MacBook Air (M1) they had there... checked that it was running Monterey (which it was) and swiftly checked the 'tap-to-click' box in system preferences... proceeded to open Keynote and created 10x10 table of cells... 97% success rate when selecting said cells. Slightly better than the average I get on my MacBook Pro (2017, 13") at home but not perfect... bear in mind my MacBook Air running Big Sur gets 100% time after time. Here's to open the next update means a return to normal

Hi guys, I have been experiencing the same issue, and I would like to note that somehow the issue is WAY more conspicuous in Safari in comparison to Google Chrome.

Idk if this is one or two seperate issues since I have noticed it in Safari in Big Sur. Then, Safari was the only app where this problem exist. However, since my Monterey update, not only Safari but all other apps have been insensitive to tap to click.

Btw, I also get 93% in the test suggested earlier in the thread.

YES. MacBook Air 13-in 2017. MacOS 12.0.1.

Today I finally got so fed up with this that I began searching for possible causes for this problem and landed...here. Since updating to Monterey I've had the slowdown that some others have experienced, along with some general glitchy behavior and freezing. And intermittent trackpad unresponsiveness, only to the tap-click function; everything else seems to work fine. This problem is particularly unfortunate when compounded by the intermittent lag that also started after updating to Monterey.

I too am considering reverting to Big Sur because the cumulative annoyance of these constant little issues is substantial. It effectively transformed this machine's UI from smooth and seamlessly functional to a choppy, glitchy, laggy mess.

I'll be honest, I've been an Apple user for more than a decade but if update nightmares continue apace (not even going to get into the latest ios privacy stuff) I'll be seriously reconsidering that when it's time for my next machine/device. Apple, hope you're reading.

Just wanted to add it's more than tap to click that's affected, the trackpad often recognizes one finger less than the number of fingers touching it.

So it scrolls widely to the side instead of switching work spaces, moves the curser instead of zooming etc.

Very noticeable and disruptive on endless-canvas apps like Figma, where the excellent trackpad experience used to be enough for me to recommend the move from Windows to other people.

Wow! So weird and random. My new MBP M1 Max works fine, mostly. It is a shame that I have to click three times when using modifier keys, but it is consistent behavior and I can deal with it. What was not acceptable was the random clicks not registering, with or without modifier keys, and so I rolled my late 2015 iMac back to Big Sur. Obviously, there is no rolling back a brand new Mac that shipped with Mon"s"terey.

Again, my new MBP user account was brought over from my 2020 MBP that was on Big Sur still. I don't know if that is what gave me good tap-to-clickiness or not, but I'm fine with the trackpad performance on the new machine running Mon"s"terey.
