Tap-to-click issue on MacOS 12.0.1

So I've been having this very annoying issue in Monterey that happens randomly when I tap to click. Sometimes the occurrence is not registered and the click is 'wasted', like clicking in vain. This is so frustrating and happens so often that I'm really considering going back to BigSur because of it (even though I'm loving Monterey so far, except for this bug). I saw a few people mentioning they're having this issue but not as many people as I thought there would be. I have this happening with my M1 MBA.

Is anybody else experiencing this with their MacBooks or magic trackpads?

I resolved my issue on my M1 MB Air by selecting "Light" in the Trackpad "Point & Click" section.

It was driving me up the wall, I upgraded my work MB Air first, dealt with this issue and then upgraded my home MB Air M1, thinking I'd just deal with it until Apple figured it out.

Turns out it was just the setting in the aforementioned preference.

Completely unacceptable. When you buy something that has a function you rely on, you expect it to work 100% of the time. You shouldn't have to change the way you use it because the developers broke it. It's like buying a car without the rear view mirror. You can still turn your head around and it will work for 93% of the situations you need it, but the 7% would probably result in an accident.

IMO the percentages we are getting for testing this the way the guy suggested above just shows us how inaccurate tap to click is right now. It should work 100% of the time. Even if it was 99%, it would still be broken and need fixing.

I don't disagree. 7% miss rate is not okay. But, for me, it was almost definitely more like around 20%, probably more, at its worst.

With my test, I got 94%.

I don't find this a huge problem. I can get my work done without too much stress. Previously, I was just wondering when I was going to have enough time on my hands to download Big Sur, create a boot disk and install. It was nightmarish almost.

Trust me, I know what you are talking about. It was the same for me. For whatever reason, mucking around in the trackpad settings etc. gave me a pretty dramatic improvement. I hope you find some combination that works for you.

Edit: I should add, I have a MBP 2019 that is still on Big Sur and I am not about to update to Monterey. I'm far from confident enough to put that on my machine that currently does my video editing! That would be a potential disaster!

You’re absolutely right, I completely agree. The fact that this official software release has mucked up the user experience should hold apple completely liable. If this issue continues with the next software update I’ll demand either my money back (unlikely to happen) or a replacement of the machine. We shouldn’t have to settle with anything other than a perfectly functioning trackpad before they messed it up. I’m not enjoying the haptic feedback clicks as they seem like too much effort. I’m still using tap to click and taking in the frustration of having a few taps completely fail.

Apple- bring the next fix in quickly!

Yes I thought about asking for a replacement or something, but I have an M1 MBA so, even though it's in the 1 year apple care, they would probably not do anything since I could just downgrade to BigSur. If you have one of the new MBP though, I think you could consider doing something about it since you can't have BigSur on it and god knows how long it will take to apple to fix this.

My machine is also the M1 MacBook Air like yours. I agree the unanimous (albeit embarrassing) workaround would be to downgrade operating systems, but I’m sure even they would consider that a massive compromise for a costumer to experience basic necessary hardware functionalities. I think I’ll try my best to tolerate it till the next fix comes, as I’m adjusting and learning the other features of Monterey and I wouldn’t want to miss out. I’ve adjusted the click settings to ‘light’ to keep it as quiet as possible lol, although I still much prefer tapping the trackpad.

Thanks for the advice, it’s really reassuring that there’s quite a number of people voicing their concerns on here- hopefully this might accelerate matters.

Best wishes,

Ali.

I think i’ve reached my limit. Had to do a research online, followed a lot of links for reference and had plenty of tabs open in safari (i dont usually have that many open, only around 8 but this time i had like 25) and it was ****. I had miss taps all the ****** time and it was a pain to drive the cursor back to the link i’ve just clicked countless times. I’m going back to bigsur tomorrow and i dont wanna see monterey any time soon.

Hello everyone,

I have had 3 taps rejected following the aforementioned experiment. Annoyingly a few more taps were rejected as soon as I closed the window and started typing this message. It is very clear now that many of us users are getting very frustrated with this nonsense software update. I really hope they are fixing this and distribute a fix as soon as possible.

Best wishes,

Ali
