MacBook (Monterey) won't play Photos slideshow

I upgraded to Monterey the first day the new macOS became available (October 25). Today—one week later—I tried without success to run a slideshow in Photos. I started by selecting a set of my own photos from my Photos library. Then I clicked on Slideshow.

The slideshow pane opened, but to only a black screen. If I nudged my mouse, the play/pause controls displayed, but no photos at all. No music, either. I exited Photos, restarted my MacBook Pro, relaunched Photos, and tried again. No joy.

This very same slideshow works perfectly on my iPhone 7 (iOS 15). Therefore I suspect the problems lies with my MacBook Pro, the new macOS, my Photos library, or some combination thereof. Any suggestions?

Good afternoon, ryane77—Bottom line: problem solved, and thank you. I'd like to add a little more information.

Before I went the Safe Mode route, I tried one more time to run a slide show. The problem persisted, so I disconnected my machine from any peripherals, including my external monitor and external speakers, and restarted in Safe Mode. This time, Photos could run slide shows in Vintage Photos, Classic, and Magazine styles, but not in any other style. (Weird, huh?) Yet, when running any slide show, I got no sound. More weird.

I checked my Sound settings, where my machine's internal speakers did not appear in the Output choices. Research took me to resetting my NVRAM, which restored my internal speakers. Then I launched Photos and found that my slide show runs like it's supposed to.

So I'm not sure which approach worked—Safe Mode or resetting NVRAM—but I'm happy.
