Bluetooth Connection Problems in macOS Monterey

Hey Apple Support Community,

After upgrading to macOS Monterey recently, I have started experiencing a few issues with the bluetooth headphones I normally connect to my Mac:

  • The signal stutters in and out briefly while listening to music, and this happens about once a minute or so.
  • Less frequently, the bluetooth connection drops completely, and then reconnects several seconds later.

I don't have these issues when my headphones are connected to my iPhone (iOS 14). The headphones I am using are Bose NC 700s. I have not yet tested a different bluetooth audio device, but I will update this post when I do. Also, this issue occurs even when I am stationary and sitting right next to my Mac.

Obviously this has made the experience of using bluetooth in Monterey pretty awful. Just wanted to see if anyone else is having these issues, or similar ones, and if anyone has a solution for it.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.0

You may try this thing - go to Settings --> Sharing and uncheck AirPlay Receiver (this is the feature that allows iOS devices to display photos and videos on a Mac that has this feature on - https://support.apple.com/en-za/guide/mac-help/mchleee00ec8/mac).

It's a cool feature that Apple introduced recently but unfortunately, it creates a mess with Bluetooth connectivity as well (at least that has been the case with my iMac '27 2019, with which I've been having this issue since last August and finally figured out because of this thread that this setting can be the culprit)

Same here! This is Ridiculous that this problem is still going on and has not been fixed yet. My Bluetooth does eventually work after about 20 minutes. But not until I wait. And also my hard drives do not show up for about 30 minutes to an hour. Then they eventually pop up sometimes I have to unplug and plug them back in I don’t even know if that works it doesn’t work right away. But then eventually they show up and I’ve already sent them to be visible in the preferences. This OS is terrible.

Still not working. My Bluetooth works after 10-20 mins of waiting. And the external HD and SSDs HD don’t show up till about 30-40 mins. I try to unplug them, plug back in. Does not show up (and yes I have Finder preferences to Show all HD) they eventually pop up after/ within and hour. What is going On. Please All methods mentioned above, I have tried.

I have the same issue like everybody else. It is strange but at certain point my macbook air is not connected to marshall speaker. Although it is saying, that it is connected, it is not playing the music. I tried connection through phone, and everything is ok. I also tried to remove and add device, restart, nothing helped. I tried safe mode and surprisingly, the music was playing through marshall speaker. But when i switched back, it did not work anymore. And it seems like Apple is ignoring this major problem.

I have the same issue.

Have a set of PowerBeats that worked flawlessly with MacOS Big Sur..

I get the same stuttering where the sound drops out for about 2-4 seconds.. either listening to music, web content or ZOOM calls.

No issues with Headphones when connected to iPhone 11 Max Pro.

It only started happening after I installed Big Sur.

Also have a McBook Pro 16" 2019.

I am starting to think that the issue has gotten worse since the update.

I have tried ideas that some sites are saying about deleting Bluetooth profiled from the Mac, that does not work.

I even moved my Mac mini closer to the Google nest thinking the BT signal is weak and cannot pass through a little wood and glass, and that did not help.

If people are having issues even with Magic Keyboards and Mice, so happy I have the Logitech stuff with the USB plug, I get issues with that connecting now and then, but nothing like the Magic stuff.

I am also experiencing issues with bluetooth devices since the upgrade to MAC OS Monterey. its beyond a joke that this kinda issue was not found in testing and the bug was released to the general public.

Apple needs to pull their finger out and patch this, bluetooth is used heavily this day and age. I have had to go back to a wired keyboard and mouse just so i can use my headphones with out sounding like a robot or my mouse or keyboard lagging

Bluetooth problem:

2019 Macbook pro: Headphones stopped working after Monterey. The headphones work with iphone, and Magic Mouse works with Monterey. Tried everything I could find online to fix the headphones problem on the Macbook, with no luck.

Finally called Apple support, and the problem seems to be that Monterey includes a Bluetooth security update which is not supported by some (e.g. older or third party) Bluetooth devices. Thus, they will not work on a computer running Monterey.

It appears Apple is well aware of the potential for devices to no longer work after updating to Monterey but has not informed users of the potential Bluetooth incompatibility with some devices such as speakers and headphones.

I asked customer service which headphones would work with Monterey and was told there *was* an article that would help me, but neither he nor his colleague could find it. All he could tell me is that I Monterey supports Bluetooth 4.1. Looking at the problems and replies on this thread, I am quite hesitant to buy new headphones, even though I absolutely need them, as there appears to be absolutely no way of knowing what will work with Monterey.

This drives me wild. My $300 BT headphones won't work, neither will my second pair of BT earbuds that I bought specially after the Monterey upgrade to replace the older set that appeared not to work. Nor will the small speaker I travel with.

Can I go back to the Monterey version before this one?

Give me strength!! Apple please fix this debacle.... ASAP!
