Bluetooth Connection Problems in macOS Monterey

Hey Apple Support Community,

After upgrading to macOS Monterey recently, I have started experiencing a few issues with the bluetooth headphones I normally connect to my Mac:

  • The signal stutters in and out briefly while listening to music, and this happens about once a minute or so.
  • Less frequently, the bluetooth connection drops completely, and then reconnects several seconds later.

I don't have these issues when my headphones are connected to my iPhone (iOS 14). The headphones I am using are Bose NC 700s. I have not yet tested a different bluetooth audio device, but I will update this post when I do. Also, this issue occurs even when I am stationary and sitting right next to my Mac.

Obviously this has made the experience of using bluetooth in Monterey pretty awful. Just wanted to see if anyone else is having these issues, or similar ones, and if anyone has a solution for it.

You may try this thing - go to Settings --> Sharing and uncheck AirPlay Receiver (this is the feature that allows iOS devices to display photos and videos on a Mac that has this feature on - https://support.apple.com/en-za/guide/mac-help/mchleee00ec8/mac).

It's a cool feature that Apple introduced recently but unfortunately, it creates a mess with Bluetooth connectivity as well (at least that has been the case with my iMac '27 2019, with which I've been having this issue since last August and finally figured out because of this thread that this setting can be the culprit)

What would be nice is someone, ANYONE, from Apple would join this thread, take some info about what sort of machines people are using and having issues with, get that info and pass it on.

Info probably would not go much beyond the thread here, but at least it would give the feeling that they care enough to look into the issue.

We are not 2 months into Monterey and it seems like new features are more important than fixing the things the update broke. Just make a small 12.1.X update and bang out the fix.

Funny how at the start of the year when the Apple news sites started putting up stories about bluetooth issues, there was a fix out pretty fast.

One work around i have found for my audio issues during teams, FaceTime and zoom calls is forcing the APTX codec on the on the Bluetooth audio module by running the following commands

sudo defaults write bluetoothaudiod "Enable AptX codec" -bool true

sudo pkill bluetoothd

this crappy work around fixes my audio issue but not the lag experienced with other devices (and when i say its a crappy work around, it is as i have having to do it 4 - 5 times a day depending on the amount of call/meetings i attend)

i hope the above assists in some of the issue some people are audio issues. Apple please pull your finger out and sort this out or i am now looking at downgrade options

I have the same issue here with Soundcore Life Q30 headphones and TOZO-T12 earbuds. I have an open case with Apple Support and have tried many fix actions- resets, reinstalls, etc. My last test with Apple Support had me roll back to a Catalina image with no additional programs installed which are not part of that Apple Catalina install. Bluetooth was fine at this point. I installed all Catalina updates, was still fine, then upgraded to Monterey and the troubles came back. So I've now again rolled back to Catalina with its most current updates and Bluetooth is working fine. Unfortunately I now can't run other apps I'd like to run due to Apple Store wanting me to be on Monterey. I'm yet awaiting word from Apple Support.

I have a similar issue. I am on a MacBook Pro, 13-inch, M1, 2020 with macOS 12.1. My bluetooth connection seems to work (Apple mouse and keyboard are connected and work as expected), but my headphones (Sony WH-1000 XM4 and WF-1000 XM4) do not work properly. They are connected, however, sound is only coming out of the right earbud/speaker. Interestingly, the headphones worked for a while on Monterey, but at some point, the sound was weird and then the left speaker stopped playing at all. This happened to both my headphones.

I am using both headphones on an Samsung Android device and on an iPad Air without the issues.

I hope there is a solution soon!

Try to go to System Preferences > Sound > Output. Select your headphones and confirm that the balance is not all the way to one side. If it is, just move the slider back to the middle and you should get sound on both ears again. I saw this in another post as being a common behavior after the upgrade to Monterey for some M1 Macs.

Ive tried all these suggestions multiple times. I have no joy and am disappointed there are simple bluetooth issues at this stage. Bluetooth isn't hard or new. I have issues with bluetooth speakers. I also have issues with Google devices being unable to find an Assistant. I have followed all the suggestions and with respect answers like gee we are glad your problem isn't as bad as it was aren't really very responsive.

If it worked before the upgrade and doesn't after it indicate that your tech team really doesn't do regression testing (re-running functional and non-functional tests to ensure that previously developed and tested software still performs after a change) to the detriment of your customers.

So my question is, after months of having a recognised problem - when will there be a definitive fix in the OS?

THANK YOU dot-fig! I would never have thought to look at AirPlay Sharing but turning that off (I don't remember turning it on, BTW) seems to have cleared up the audio blinks for me with AirPods Pro and any audio source on the Mac. I'd done a complete erase and install Monterey 12.1 to try and fix this issue, and gone through the whole 'Capture Data' app with Apple Support and that (dumb) little checkbox in System Preferences cleared it all up.

Geekahertz, I don't know if you are still having this problem, but I have a Samsung J series, and it either fails to connect or seems to connect and then immediately drops. The only way I've been able to do a reset is if I unplug the soundbar and plug it back in. Never had this problem before, and my iphone and ipad have no issue connecting to it. My Macbook started having this issue after this upgrade to Monterey.

i Have tried everything g possible with my sound bar and still will not connect.

even my Google Nest mini will connect and randomly drop.

I have my sound bar plugged into my mini via the headphone jack, lucky for me Apple was courageous enough to keep the jack instead of ripping it out of the Mac mini.

clearly this is a software problem since many people prior to this reply have said downgrading to the previous operating system has fix the issue, so either Apple just wants to ignore it or they just don’t feel that the few dozen of us complaining are worthy enough to try to figure out how to fix it.

Also bumping this.

Running an early 2015 13" Macbook Pro, OS Monterey 12.1

• Coworkers telling me that my audio (I alternate between airpods pro and Bose QC35) keeps cutting in and out after like 10-15 minutes on the call.

• My Bose QC35 only carry audio thru one side when connected to my Macbook - but they work fine on my iPhone

It seems that this is a Monterey issue, so like others I'll just wait for an update - but please Apple let's go. This is making working from home pretty annoying lol sos

I have the same problem since Monterrey! MacBook Pro early 2015. Multiple devices became incompatible and I have connectivity issues.

My headphones from anker sound core life q30 stopped working with my Mac do the the update they became incompatible. (Don't know how it's possible with bluetooth). Also my UE boom 2 speakers also are incompatible... Whilst my Xiaomi bluetooth speakers still works. Super strange!

The bluetooth issues show up while in teams or zoom. When I switch between full screens and I do something heavier then just zoom. The bluetooth stutters and suddenly the headphones become quiet no Sound and mic. I have to turn bluetooth on and off in settings for it to work again.

Happens with my airdpods 2nd gen and AirPods Pro.

Handoff copy paste and airdrop also don't work until turn off and on of bluetooth.

Restting bluetooth by deleting plists and command center actions didn't work yet. SMC reset neither.

Does anybody else experience bluetooth incompatibility issues with non apple devices? Is there a fix yet or workaround?
