Bluetooth Connection Problems in macOS Monterey

Hey Apple Support Community,

After upgrading to macOS Monterey recently, I have started experiencing a few issues with the bluetooth headphones I normally connect to my Mac:

  • The signal stutters in and out briefly while listening to music, and this happens about once a minute or so.
  • Less frequently, the bluetooth connection drops completely, and then reconnects several seconds later.

I don't have these issues when my headphones are connected to my iPhone (iOS 14). The headphones I am using are Bose NC 700s. I have not yet tested a different bluetooth audio device, but I will update this post when I do. Also, this issue occurs even when I am stationary and sitting right next to my Mac.

Obviously this has made the experience of using bluetooth in Monterey pretty awful. Just wanted to see if anyone else is having these issues, or similar ones, and if anyone has a solution for it.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.0

You may try this thing - go to Settings --> Sharing and uncheck AirPlay Receiver (this is the feature that allows iOS devices to display photos and videos on a Mac that has this feature on - https://support.apple.com/en-za/guide/mac-help/mchleee00ec8/mac).

It's a cool feature that Apple introduced recently but unfortunately, it creates a mess with Bluetooth connectivity as well (at least that has been the case with my iMac '27 2019, with which I've been having this issue since last August and finally figured out because of this thread that this setting can be the culprit)

What would be nice is someone, ANYONE, from Apple would join this thread, take some info about what sort of machines people are using and having issues with, get that info and pass it on.

Info probably would not go much beyond the thread here, but at least it would give the feeling that they care enough to look into the issue.

We are not 2 months into Monterey and it seems like new features are more important than fixing the things the update broke. Just make a small 12.1.X update and bang out the fix.

Funny how at the start of the year when the Apple news sites started putting up stories about bluetooth issues, there was a fix out pretty fast.

Ive tried all these suggestions multiple times. I have no joy and am disappointed there are simple bluetooth issues at this stage. Bluetooth isn't hard or new. I have issues with bluetooth speakers. I also have issues with Google devices being unable to find an Assistant. I have followed all the suggestions and with respect answers like gee we are glad your problem isn't as bad as it was aren't really very responsive.

If it worked before the upgrade and doesn't after it indicate that your tech team really doesn't do regression testing (re-running functional and non-functional tests to ensure that previously developed and tested software still performs after a change) to the detriment of your customers.

So my question is, after months of having a recognised problem - when will there be a definitive fix in the OS?

What this forum needs is more than settling, mitigating, disabling features, discarding or disabling pricey equipment, This thread is about Bluetooth which is ubiquitous and well established. If a computer used to talk to a device and after a software ‘upgrade’ doesn’t, if reverting the upgrade to the previous level restores connectivity, then it is patently obvious where the fault lies. I will certainly consider that for my next purchase. Support is a key decision point in choosing a computer. I have perfectly good equipment which no longer provides the services I purchased it to do. Thanks completely to Apple.

Please help! I am also experiencing this issue with my late 2015 Macbook Pro. I have two pairs of headphones that have major bluetooth connectivity issues (Sony wh-1000xm4 AND Airpods Pro). I have done ALL of the recommendations on this thread, and what I found elsewhere. My headphones connect to my iPhone without any issues. I use my headphones and laptop for Zoom appointments at home and the Monterey update has essentially rendered them both useless. They connect and disconnect (although indicate they are still connected) after 5-10 minutes. I have to turn bluetooth on and off to get them to work which is very inconvenient when in meetings. I am VERY frustrated that the most recent update for Monterey (12.2.1) did NOT fix the issue. Please help, my work from home set-up was perfect until Monterey.

My problems continue. I have tried everything posters have suggested (I'm very grateful to you all) but i'm still having to connect to my Bluetooth speakers via a cable. The last time I criticised the lack of response from Apple ( I had suggested we use a Ouija board to contact them) my post was deleted. Let's see what happens with this one.

Just one detail for my issue with Bluetooth connectivity, in fact, whenever I get the issue I lose Wifi as well and get it back on when I plug both the Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad II via cables and turn off Bluetooth.

Another thing is that if I try to reboot my iMac' 27 2019 my machine becomes unresponsive and I have to unplug the power cable to reset SMC (which helps only for one time and when the next occasion of this bug occurs I go through the same procedure again).
