Bluetooth Connection Problems in macOS Monterey

Hey Apple Support Community,

After upgrading to macOS Monterey recently, I have started experiencing a few issues with the bluetooth headphones I normally connect to my Mac:

  • The signal stutters in and out briefly while listening to music, and this happens about once a minute or so.
  • Less frequently, the bluetooth connection drops completely, and then reconnects several seconds later.

I don't have these issues when my headphones are connected to my iPhone (iOS 14). The headphones I am using are Bose NC 700s. I have not yet tested a different bluetooth audio device, but I will update this post when I do. Also, this issue occurs even when I am stationary and sitting right next to my Mac.

Obviously this has made the experience of using bluetooth in Monterey pretty awful. Just wanted to see if anyone else is having these issues, or similar ones, and if anyone has a solution for it.

You may try this thing - go to Settings --> Sharing and uncheck AirPlay Receiver (this is the feature that allows iOS devices to display photos and videos on a Mac that has this feature on - https://support.apple.com/en-za/guide/mac-help/mchleee00ec8/mac).

It's a cool feature that Apple introduced recently but unfortunately, it creates a mess with Bluetooth connectivity as well (at least that has been the case with my iMac '27 2019, with which I've been having this issue since last August and finally figured out because of this thread that this setting can be the culprit)

Since upgrading to Monterey 12.1, my Sony WH1000XM4 headphones sound only out of the Right ear piece when using my MacBook Pro (it is the newest MacBook). This does not happen with my iPhone or iPad, so it is definitely the operating system. I have done all the "fixes" to no avail, including calling Sony. Glad to see it is happening to others. Since this has been a problem, how come Apple is not fixing it in their software?

I too just upgraded to 12.3.1 on my 2015 MacBook Air hoping for the bluetooth fix and once again no go. I also went into terminal to try the "sudo pkill bluetoothd" and Terminal would not allow me to enter my password at all. I can't believe this is continuing without some help from Apple. I am not going to upgrade my Pro's until this issue is fixed. I have switched all usage to Apple products because of their dependability but I may have to rethink this strategy moving forward.

I am having a very similar issue to what is on this thread, however my issues started before I upgraded to Monterey.

About 2 months ago I was in a Google Meet using my Airpods (generation 1) with my MacBookAir (2017) when the person I was meeting with could not hear me. They said I was coming in and out and crackly. This issue started here and there - no rhyme or reason - but has progressively gotten worse.

About 2 weeks ago, I upgraded to Monterey. Now it happens in almost every Google Meet, but comes and goes throughout the meeting. Once I take my Airpods off and just use my computer my microphone is fine. I thought it was my Airpods so I went and bought a pair that are 3rd generation, and I am still having the issue. I also tried another computer (still a MacBook Air 2017 running Monterey 12.4) and I am still having the issue.

This also occurs for me both at home and at work so it is not my internet connection.
