Finder columns jump back to last column

When traversing through the hierarchy and I reach some column deep enough that the horizontal scroll is active in the window. Then when I want to go back to one of the first columns by scrolling horizontal, the window scrolls/jumps back to show the last column.

I need to deselect the last objects (folders or files) to prevent the jumps.

It's like the window wants to keep showing the selection.

It happens on 2 machines, since Monterey.

Mac Pro, macOS 12.0

Did you try this? It worked for me to go to system preferences>general> Under show scroll bars select: when scrolling. That resolved it for me, when it was on automatic that is when it was jumping like crazy. I am also using Monterey and was about to pull my hair out, it's annoying for sure, but changing the above settings and doing a restart fixed it for me.

Same issue here. Macbook Pro 15-inch 2019 running Big Sur 12.1. Having a file selected in column view and then scrolling left/higher up the file tree allows me to only go as far as the point that the selected file moves off to the right of the finder window and then everything snaps back to the selected file.

*Edit: This happens sporadically within Finder itself, but happens 100% of the time when navigating Open/Save dialogues set to column view within apps.

This is definitely a bug.

Unfortunately, it's not consistent. I'm having this issue on my iMac but not on my laptop at the moment.

The situation I'm experiencing is:

1) I'm in the finder with a column view window open

2) I'm in the last column, at the far right of that window

3) I try to (use my magic mouse or key commands to) scroll up through the parent folders to get closer to the root

4) after a second or two, the finder automatically jumps back down to the far right column

5) this repeats until I am able to highlight a folder or file in any of the parent columns

6) however this process will repeat when I try to navigate up to another parent folder or file using the same steps (3 & 4)

I'm also a longtime Mac user, having watched the OS evolve since 1989. Monterey has a lot of bugs including this one. This is a legitimate bug, and the answer from the "Community Specialist" looks like a form letter that was just shot out in response. Other comments are from people whose Macs are working just fine and don't believe this is a problem. These comments are not helpful.

One of the biggest reasons I use a Mac is because of column view. Yet, Apple has made few useful improvements to it since 1999. It could be so much better, and this snapping back to the last column is a nuisance worthy of cursing. Also with Monterey are brand new bugs, including "things just won't click the first time" or "the mouse lags." I've got a pretty souped up iMac Pro, so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

Come on, Apple. You can do better than this. Monterey is rotten in my view.

Yep, thanks for the post @Toupee, that is clear video representation of the problem.

Apple don't tell us that's a feature, it's a bug. All columns to the left have historically allowed vertical scrolling without bouncing back to the selected far right column. If I click in the column it will always let me scroll, but I never had to click on it in the past and don't always have to now. Sometimes I just want to look at other folders without leaving the folder that is selected, other times I want to change to a new folder but shouldn't have to select the column before scrolling in it. This might seem trivial but it aggravates me every time and makes me wish for my wave keyboard and consider a new PC dozens of times a day. Just fix it already...

Ah, I see - yes, it's when I'm hovering over the column and scrolling, not clicking on it. That will help me mitigate (and explains why keyboard use doesn't cause this problem). But dang, I hate it. I actually like how MacOS in general doesn't make you click on windows to scroll in them; I had to find a comparable tool for Windows to do the same thing. So this is really annoying that it isn't working for a critical part of the user experience.

Having the same problem on multiple machines.

MacBookPro 15" 2017 Monterey 12.3.1 (21E258)

iMac 27" 2019 Monterey 12.4 (21F79)

Not sure if Apple even reads this. Is this bug reported correctly at the bug report page so we can vote there?

It also drives me mad.

First I thought this happens because I'm connected to a network drive. But it also happens locally on the MacBookPro.

I've tried booting in Safe Mode: the problem persisted for 1 minute, then went away.

I've also tried booting normally, and playing with OneDrive (by force quitting all the OneDrive processes in Activity Monitor and/or quitting OneDrive) but the problem persisted. Interestingly, this behaviour is very inconsistent, i.e. it will work normally sometimes and then not.

I'm having the same problem. I've also been using Macs since the late 80's and have never experienced this until this latest update. The problem has graduated from "kind of annoying" to "very problematic" since I'm now working on a project with many files spread out among several columns that require horizontal scrolling. It's troublesome enough for me to stop in the middle of it and search the internet for a solution, which is how I came to be here.
