Finder columns jump back to last column

When traversing through the hierarchy and I reach some column deep enough that the horizontal scroll is active in the window. Then when I want to go back to one of the first columns by scrolling horizontal, the window scrolls/jumps back to show the last column.

I need to deselect the last objects (folders or files) to prevent the jumps.

It's like the window wants to keep showing the selection.

It happens on 2 machines, since Monterey.

Mac Pro, macOS 12.0

Hey, thanks for your reply but... I'm using Macs since 1989 so I do know how the Finder works. :-)

The whole problem is that it doesn't work like it used to.

You should be able to scroll the window to view the hierarchy in both directions. It shouldn't jump back to the last column automatically.

I think it's a bug, but I wanted to find out if others have seen this too.

I have had Apples (I am working on a 27" iMac 2017, i7) since 1991 and I can say that since Apple updated Monterey, I have had some pretty weird things happening with Finder, Safari (and all my applications), switched to FireFox, then Chrome and nothing seems to be like it was before their most recent updates (constant screen freezing, applications quitting, stuff disappearing and then reappearing).  I have reinstalled the system software and follow all of the support ‘advice’ and noting seems to stop the weirdness. It is so frustrating.  I postulated that what Apple has done is written their operating system to fit their new M1 CPU and the ‘old’ Intel processors like my 2017 iMac are left in the lurch. UGH! Big bugs, in Monterey that Apple needs to fix ASAP!

EDIT: As soon as I posted this the problem came back. I'm even MORE perplexed because this did fix it for a few minutes. Back to square one :( Definitely feels like a glaring bug!

I'm a longtime Apple user but just got a brand new Macbook and was having this issue. I think I just fixed it! I went to System Preference > General > then for "Click in the scroll bar to" I changed it to "Jump to the spot that's clicked". Really hope this helps someone, it was sooo annoying.

I recorded a video example to show what I'm experiencing over here. I noticed this time that it triggered when I scrolled slightly left, then scrolled down while hovering over a farther left column. Not all columns though. A bit random. I don't know if this only happens on scrolling but it was definitely happening, repeatedly, just now.

Apparently I can't post a Dropbox link? How am I supposed to share a screen recording? The Youtube embed button says 'Add an Apple YouTube link,' which I don't understand either.

The issue for me isn't scrolling left or right across columns, it is scrolling vertically in a column that is several columns to the left of the last folder viewed. This is also sporadic, sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't. I haven't determined the trigger to failure, but any time it won't scroll, if I click in the left column I want to vertically scroll it lets me scroll there. The bug is that I shouldn't have to click first. It was never required before Monterey and it isn't always required now. For example for some reason, I was just able to scroll vertically in column 2 when I had folders in four more columns selected (plus 5th column with documents in it). I closed finder, then opened it again, navigated to the same folder, scrolled left to the second column, and when I tried to scroll down in that column the screen bounces back to the far right column. It is a defect, no way this is a feature, and if it was the use case is rediculous because it breaks prior useful user experience for no rational reason and is inconsistent.

Yep, thanks for the post @Toupee, that is clear video representation of the problem.

Apple don't tell us that's a feature, it's a bug. All columns to the left have historically allowed vertical scrolling without bouncing back to the selected far right column. If I click in the column it will always let me scroll, but I never had to click on it in the past and don't always have to now. Sometimes I just want to look at other folders without leaving the folder that is selected, other times I want to change to a new folder but shouldn't have to select the column before scrolling in it. This might seem trivial but it aggravates me every time and makes me wish for my wave keyboard and consider a new PC dozens of times a day. Just fix it already...

Ah, I see - yes, it's when I'm hovering over the column and scrolling, not clicking on it. That will help me mitigate (and explains why keyboard use doesn't cause this problem). But dang, I hate it. I actually like how MacOS in general doesn't make you click on windows to scroll in them; I had to find a comparable tool for Windows to do the same thing. So this is really annoying that it isn't working for a critical part of the user experience.

Still not fixed. Updated to latest version of OS. What is also happening using a Logi trackball: When there is a list of folders or files in list view, the scroll doesn't work. I have to use the keyboard down arrow to go to the bottom file/folder in the window, and only then does the scroll work. I have started using the Apple trackpad as well, and then doesn't work until I scroll up first, then I can scroll down.

Apologies if someone has already mentioned it, but I found selecting 'Hide Preview' in the 'View' menu stopped the column view snapping back to the left. Not perfect as I like seeing previews of images, but considering Monterey still doesn't show previews for .eps files, options are limited anyway. Never know these two issues might get fixed one day?

I have the same problem. I am running macOS Monterey Ver. 12.3.1 on iMac M1 chip. After contacting support and testing to see if the problem replicates itself on safe boot, I believe the problem is associated with google drive sync. I am using the option "mirror files" in google folder sync setting. Only with files within the google drive viewed on Finder that the column keeps jumping back, it doesn't happen when I access other folders/files outside the google drive.

The more details we supply about what triggers the defect the better chance we have of getting it fixed. Pay close attention to any behavior that always works and that always fails. If we identify clear reproducible steps it will help immensely. Have friends with the same problem join the forum and contribute or inform you of unique behavior.
