Finder columns jump back to last column

When traversing through the hierarchy and I reach some column deep enough that the horizontal scroll is active in the window. Then when I want to go back to one of the first columns by scrolling horizontal, the window scrolls/jumps back to show the last column.

I need to deselect the last objects (folders or files) to prevent the jumps.

It's like the window wants to keep showing the selection.

It happens on 2 machines, since Monterey.

Mac Pro, macOS 12.0

Hey, thanks for your reply but... I'm using Macs since 1989 so I do know how the Finder works. :-)

The whole problem is that it doesn't work like it used to.

You should be able to scroll the window to view the hierarchy in both directions. It shouldn't jump back to the last column automatically.

I think it's a bug, but I wanted to find out if others have seen this too.

Tested this a bit more and discovered for me (MacBook 16 intel Monterey 12.3.1 Dropbox synced folders) the issue only arises in finder columns view on columns that I haven't scrolled to the bottom of before selecting a file. If I select a file 5 layers deep in my folder hierarchy and then attempt to scroll down in a higher level hierarchy my screen snaps back to show the selected file's details. However, all columns that I have scrolled to the bottom of before selecting the file can be scrolled in without a problem after selecting the file. Columns that I have not scrolled to the bottom of before selecting a file cause the window to snap back to show the selected file when attempting to scroll down.

Hoping the rest of the followers here can confirm on their machines and post to help us finally get to the bottom of this (pun intended).

I think quirkymissy is on to something. I also verified that the problem is with cloud-based files and folders. The local drive folders / files do not behave the same. This may also explain why there are so many different results for people in this thread. Perhaps this information can help someone resolve the problem. Why do cloud-based files and folders present differently in the window?

This is still a massive issue and this bug is driving me mad.

When you navigate to the end of a folder structure and have an item highlighted, each time you try to scroll left to back up the parent folders you are jumped back to the end item. Please please fix this.

Having the same problem on multiple machines.

MacBookPro 15" 2017 Monterey 12.3.1 (21E258)

iMac 27" 2019 Monterey 12.4 (21F79)

Not sure if Apple even reads this. Is this bug reported correctly at the bug report page so we can vote there?

It also drives me mad.

First I thought this happens because I'm connected to a network drive. But it also happens locally on the MacBookPro.

So I tried Old Toad's suggestion and booted up in safe mode and the problem went away. While in safe mode I tried starting Google Drive and before the program even fully loaded the columns in an open window jumped back to the beginning. I quit Google Drive and the problem ended. I went back and forth a few times to confirm the results and it was the same each time. I then booted into normal mode and the problem returned and when I quit Google Drive in normal mode the problem went away. I am curious if everyone on here with this problem is using Google Drive. It is beginning to appear for me at least that this may not be an Apple issue. I am going to play with the Google Drive settings to see if something there could correct the condition. I am using the "Mirror Files" function and not the "Stream Files" function of Google Drive if that is making any difference.

I've tried booting in Safe Mode: the problem persisted for 1 minute, then went away.

I've also tried booting normally, and playing with OneDrive (by force quitting all the OneDrive processes in Activity Monitor and/or quitting OneDrive) but the problem persisted. Interestingly, this behaviour is very inconsistent, i.e. it will work normally sometimes and then not.
