gmail really slow in Monterey. How to fix?
mail.google.com is really slow since I installed Monterey. lag time is over a minute for any operation. How to fix?

Assuming you mean in Safari 15.1 on Monterey 12.0.1? I am not seeing any performance degradation with Gmail on Safari.
Suggest you clear your local storage of Google things via Safari Preferences -> Privacy -> Manage Website Data -> search for google.com and remove the Cache, Cookies, Databases, Local Storage, HSTS Policy, and HTTP Alternative Services for Google.
Then restart the Safari App and go back to mail.google.com and authenticate normally.
If problems persist, check the Safari Extensions you have in use, disable all of them and test Gmail. If that resolves things, add one extension back at a time and retest until you identify a problematic extension.
Test as well with Google Chrome which should work flawlessly with Gmail.
