Apple TV suddenly no sound

I have had my Apple TV for a little over a year and have been pleased with it. Suddenly, however, the sound stop working. It was working fine when I went to bed and when I woke up there was zero sound using any apps or even navigating the menus.

At first I thought it was the speakers or cables. After meticulous testing however, it became clear that it was the Apple TV unit. Changing the audio and video settings also does not help, resetting the unit does not help, readjusting the TV does not help.

My only guess is that the unit updated itself at night and the update is faulty. Can anyone help here?
