iPhone XR setup stuck on installation of iOS 15.1

I am trying to setup my new XR (from an iphone 8) and it keeps getting stuck on the software update (iOS 15.1). I have tried restarting the phone (and therefore the setup) as recommended here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251060556. I have also tried installing both from my old phone and from the cloud. Each time it gets stuck. I have now tried restarting four times - sometimes it's getting stuck with 1 minute remaining, or a few seconds, other times it counts down and then gets stuck on "preparing update..." and then goes no further.


Any additional suggestions? Can I somehow bypass the iOS update maybe, and do that later? Getting very frustrated now!!

If you still can't install the latest version of iOS, try downloading the update again:

  1. Go to Settings > General > [Device name] Storage.
  2. Find the iOS update in the list of apps.
  3. Tap the iOS update, then tap Delete Update.
  4. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and download the latest iOS update.

If you don’t see the update in the list of apps or if the issue happens again, you need to update your device with iTunes.

Try updating iOS after each step.

  • Try Forget the WiFi network and add again
  • Try another WiFi network 
  • Toggle sets automatically off and then on
  • Reset your network settings
  • Force restart your device
  • Remove any beta profiles, if applicable
