"you shut down your computer because of problem"

I upgraded to Monterey about a week ago. Every time I shut down my mac air 2015 and restart it again I get the message "You shut down your computer because of a problem". I had no problems. I just shut it down normally. Why do I keep getting this message?

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 12.0

This (apparently) recurring bug with MacOs appeared suddenly on my iMac several weeks ago, while running 12.3, and it continued into 12.3.1. Official Apple Help was useless, on all counts.

I tried your suggestion . . .

Opened Console

Cleared Diagnostic Reports and moved to Bin

Emptied Bin

Shut down with power button.

Left for 30 seconds

Rebooted with Power Button.

Reboot and log in worked as normal

. . . and Bob's your uncle.

Thank you.

In order to get rid of this message, we will delete a log file using Finder.

  1. Open Finder on your Mac. Use Command-Space Bar to open Spotlight, then type Finder.
  2. From the menu bar at the top, click on Go, then select Go to Folder.
  3. Type “/Library” and hit Return.
  4. Find and double-click on the Logs folder to open it.
  5. Double-click on DiagnosticReports.
  6. Go to the search (magnifying glass, top-right corner of the window) and type “sleep”.
  7. From the results, look for a recent file named Sleep Wake Failure…
  8. Right-click (Control-click) on the file, then select Move to Trash.
  9. Shutdown your Mac (Apple  menu > Shutdown).
  10. Wait 30 seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac. The message should not appear anymore when you log in.

This WORKED for me ! 9/6/2022

Thank you! This procedure worked here.

Opened Console.

Selected Diagnostic Reports

Scrolled through these. There was a Sleep Wake Failure noted on the day the power went out here. Wind storm.

Moved that one Diagnostic Report to the trash.

Emptied the trash.

Shut down.

Start up.

Looks OK. I did go through the other suggested steps, one by one, and can confirm that the message on startup, "Your computer shut down because of a problem" did persist through all of it, including reloading MacOS 12.4.

I have the same problem: iMac, Monterey. My computer has NOT shut down unexpectedly, yet, I get the message "You shut down your computer because of a problem." I did not. I have done the nvpram thing, restarted in safe mode, restarted in safe mode with all peripherals removed, reinstalled from a timemachine backup, reinstalled over the internet--the message still appears. The message does NOT appear in safe mode startup. I have noticed that my keyboard designation changed from Swedish-pro to Swedish (not sure when that happened.) The Swedish-pro designation is no longer available. Right now, I'm living within because after boot, the computer does everything it should.

I had the same problem and it apparently fixed itself. When I shut down now and hit the start button to restart I make sure I hit the circle squarely in the middle and as long as I hear the Apple sound come on my computer starts up fine without that error message. I have tried it several times now and it works perfectly. I just make sure it is completely shut down before I had the start button to restart and it does fine. I also press the start button firmly and it starts every time. I do think it is some. in Monterey -- I just bought this IMAC and downloaded Monterey and I didn't have the problem until then.
