iwatch will not updat

connected to iPhone 12 Pro with 14.8.1. running iwatch 5 software 7.6.2

when I try to find an update for the watch I get a msg saying you phone must be updated first..

If you want to update your Apple Watch to watchOS 8.X, you need iOS 15.X on your iPhone.
