Apple ID & alternate email address

When I set up my appleid, I thought it had to be an email that ended in iCloud.com. So I use the beginning of my regular email which ***. My email I’ve used since the internet came out is ***. When I try to put my aol address as a contact for FaceTime it will say it’s unavailable. I’d like to know how to change my appleid to *** now that I realize I could have done that from the beginning. My other question is, what will I do if it says that email is unavailable? Why is it unavailable? It’s very frustrating. This appleid thing.

When did you make the xxx@icloud.com in your iPhone? Was it less than 30 days ago? If so, just wait 30 days and you should be able to change it to your preferred third party email.

Have you logged into your Apple ID to see if the address shows under Reachable At, as a Rescue email address, or as a Notification email address? If it is listed, you can remove/replace the email address.

Apple ID - Manage

Apple hasn’t published any guidance for using an address again. Normally, if your e-mail address was associated with an ID in any way, for example as a Notification email address or a Rescue e-mail address, then it can't be reused as an  Apple ID email address for approximately one year. I have also seen posts that stated Apple told them there was a 30 day waiting period before the address could be used again.  You will need to get another e-mail address to use as your Apple ID or you can try waiting 30 days to see if that works.
