macbook and monitor

I bought an external monitor that will connect using the type c to type c connector when connected directly to the computer but will not work when using my USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. I need it to work through the adaptor in order to be able to use other devices and be able to plug my computer in for recharging while using. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

MacBook, macOS 11.6

Hi shadowchip,

As far as I'm aware, the USB-C port on the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter only supports power (maybe USB as well). It cannot power a monitor.

In contrast, the USB-C (or Thunderbolt, if it's a MacBook Air/Pro) port on your Mac supports DisplayPort via USB-C, which is what your Mac uses to power your monitor. That functionality isn't present in the adapter.

To solve this issue, check if your monitor supports an HDMI connection. Or, you could use a compatible docking station. Please note that the 12" MacBooks (which are no longer made) do not support Thunderbolt.

Some monitors that use a USB-C to USB-C connection might also be able to charge your Mac as you use it with the monitor.
