monterey touchpad issue

After upgrading to Mac OS Monterey, i am facing this weird issue when sometimes, randomly but quite frequently that the "single click" on "touching touchpad" is not registering it, and need to either click or touch it again to get the work done.

I have MACBook AIR M1.

Restart in Safe Mode and let it run this mode for 10 -15 minutes and test if the issue is presented.

Should the issue Not be Presented - this maybe a indication of some Third Party Software installed that is interfering with the Normal Operations of the computer.

Apple silicon

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
  4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

yes, tried this, in safe mode it seems to have 95% working, clicking on tapping, but again in normal mode its like taking click command on alternative taps. This is after Monterey upgrade.

Safe Mode does several things behind the scenes. Without any user interaction when booting. It does a Disk Repair, clears system cache files and the most important thing, in this case, Eliminates ALL Third Party Software, extensions and fonts from loading.

I had monterery touchpad issues on my MacBook Pro. Talked with Apple Care and they suggested the following which WORKED!:

1 Shut down your Mac.

2 On your built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys. Your Mac might turn on.

• Control on the left side of your keyboard

• Option (Alt) on the left side of your keyboard

• Shift on the right side of your keyboard

3 Keep holding all three keys for 7 seconds, then press and hold the power button as well. If your Mac is on, it will turn off as you hold the keys.

4 Keep holding all four keys for another 7 seconds, then release them.

5 Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.

Done that. All old extensions now banished. I have nothing else reported in "minor issues" category. This is on a wiped SSD, clean install of 12.0.1, then migration from TM backup.

Separate install of 12.1 seed on external drive has new user and minimum utilities (CCC, DaisyDisk). It too fails to register tap-to-click up to 7% of the time (measured with web "click" counter, and by a Keynote 10x10 table cell selection method (both described in the other Apple Discussions thread (7 or more pages worth).

Restarting in an external Mojave, 100% of taps are detected using the above objective tests. This is how the Mac is supposed to work – and has worked for probably over 15 years (or whenever the feature was introduced).

This is not a hardware issue. Both Intel and Apple Silicon machines are experiencing this issue, even going back several years of MBP models (mine's a 2018 15" MBP core i9).

I might add that the etrecheck account also is reporting the issue in the other Apple Discussions thread. I'm making the assumption this is the EtreCheck developer's account (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

@ Luis Sequeira1 might be right but using the MBA M1 here and not issues with " single click on " touchpad ".

You wrote "touchpad" - did you mean "trackpad"?

When you say single click, do mean an actual click, or a tap on the trackpad?

As I understand it (since this is something I don't use), the problem is that sometimes a tap does not register, forcing users to tap again, or actually click.

So do you recommend installing Etrecheck to check the issue? Also how is it related to mouse events? The issue is not about computer being slow or something, it is just missing clicks on Taps, single click on taps.

This is happening after upgrading to Monterey OS upgrade. So is with SIRI, it was smooth before not now.

Also the report is attached.
