How to change Safari tabs back to stacked iOS 15

The recent iOS 15 update has changed the way tabs are viewed in safari. Previously, the tabs appeared “stacked”, meaning that the title of each web page fit onto the screen, and the X button to close them was in the same position for every tab, making it easy to open and close them. The recent update has switched to a new view which displays the tabs as separate windows, meaning that the web page titles are too short to be of any use and sorting through tabs now means going back and forth across the screen. Is there any way to change back to the previous design? Alternatively, does anyone know of a decent alternate browser which doesn’t have this problem?

I have a degree in Cog Sci, specializing in Human Computer Interaction, and I agree that the new style is terrible design. It has taken all of the pertinent information, abridged it, made it smaller, and arranged it in a way that is difficult to decipher.

So:

  • It's not as easy to see (because it's smaller).
  • There's less of it it to see (because each title is further abridged).
  • It's harder for your brain to isolate a specific title (because they are all the same size and on the same plane, whereas the old way provided a single title as the focal point, slightly larger than the others and easily scrollable).

There you go Apple, that was a free consultation...now please fix this.

Same here, this answer is not the fix related to the question. I’m sure it was posted trying to be helpfull. The new “open tab layout” sucks, looks like google chrome! Get back to the old design please. I’m also surprised google chrome is still the only browser that is able to translate websites from japanese, mandarin etc. …to any language. Apple better use their time more wisely!

Exactly described. We now have to look at each “page” separately instead of just the “headline”.

How in the world did anyone ever think that was going to be a more efficient way to layout tabs?

Or why at least didn’t someone realize that as a minimum both alternatives would be useful to deal with the different ways that different people manage information.

Good grief. How can you guys (Apple) miss this so badly? Who in charge is so stubborn not to listen and consider all views.

it’s just sad. Really really sad …

Excellent assessment - a staggeringly bad redesign which seriously hampers the tab accessibility. Any UX design engineer worth the money will immediately identify the multiple accessibility and usability issues here which makes the change itself appear gratuitous in the extreme. For starters, the text is the primary indicator of content not the image and both are now much smaller; the visual/spatial movement required is massively increased to flip through tabs which reduces efficiency especially if your vision is less acute; the text is underneath the thumbnail (seriously who thought that was clever?). The list goes on. Monumentally poor quality control at the UX design level for this which is such a key usability feature it has me reassessing Edge, Chrome and Firefox to replace Safari on the iPhone. Pay attention - give the option to revert and also assess how this retrograde UI change made it through the delivery process.

Just want to agree that the thumbnail version of displaying open tabs is not functional. In addition to the web addresses being incomplete and how it slows down one’s ability to skim open tabs, for those of us with less than perfect vision, this display format is VERY cumbersome. I can’t imagine what it might be like for those who are actually visually impaired. There should be options for how to display open tabs so that they meet the needs of users.

Can’t figure out why Apple thought this was an improvement—even if, as it appears, other web browsers are doing it too. Smartphones should be time-saving devices — it makes no sense to have to SPEND time re-learning how to use something you already own, when the whole point was the automaticity. I feel like I came home and someone rearranged the nobs on my toaster, so that now I can’t use it without rearranging the plants in my aquarium.

I, too, went to the Apple Store to vent—effectively wasting their time as well, although the associates there were very patient and kind. I am warning friends about this update and recommending not getting it until this feature is fixed.

Agreed, this new layout is awful. If apple make updates to visuals and interfaces they should provide a way of being able to make a preference to original layouts. This is definitely a step backwards (same as removing the fingerprint is /home bottom….but that’s another angry topic of mine!) I am unable to find a way of viewing the old tab style despite following the “how to” you can Google.

I hope the developers read, take note and rectify, I am sure the vast percentage of users if asked prefer the original view……………… would love a response from Apple.
