Despite many attempts I am unable to delete the podcast app from my iMac.

Because you can't. You can remove it from the Dock however. Just drag it out.

podcasts is an app that is built into macOS, and thus cannot be deleted no matter how you try.
Thank you for the responses. I'll quit trying to remove app.
You could try the Compress option when you right click on it in finder. This turns it into a zip file.

That creates a compressed copy. Then you have both.
I'll live with the app on my system. I just won't download any podcasts.
