Apple Mail: Alert Tones or Ringtones?

If I turn on Alerts in the Mail app in Notification>Customise Notifications, I’m given a choice of Alert Tones and Ringtones. What’s the difference? Thanks

Others refer to a "sounds" button in the Gmail set-up after turning on "Notifications". This does not seem to exist on my phone"s version of Gmail. The only "sounds" button I have found is for the Apple Mail app. This Apple Mail alert sound does not carry over to the Gmail app. Gmail only has a feeble ping sound. Please do not bother responding unless you have tested your suggestion on your own I-phone.

changing default ringtone?? i’ve noticed that whenever i get an instagram notification, twitch notification, or any similar app that doesn’t have their own sound (like snapchat), it’s ALWAYS tri-tone. i was wondering if this could be changed to something else. even within apple’s choices, i think there are way better choices since i find tri-tone obnoxious and alarming. i want to chose a more calmer ringtone. it doesn’t give me an option to change this “default” ringtone i can change my phone call ringtone, text, mail, calendar, etc. but never this. i hope we get to, in the future change this default ringtone to a different one or even better, chose different ringtones for different apps i would love to have more freedom with my ringtone choices

Alert tones I read where we can’t change notification sounds for third party apps even though android can easily. What time do the 3rd party apps use? Is it the selected text tone on the iPhone etc??

I would assume alert tones are the standard tones that comes with the phone. Ringtones is anything you would've bought or created, or maybe the standard ringtones that come with the phone.

What happens when you select either one and explore what it does?
