Command + tap-to-click not working properly on 2021 M1 Macbook Pro

I have a similar problem as described here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252211114

I have tap = click enabled for my trackpad, but whenever I use the cmd key in combination with it behavior becomes flaky.

To me, it seems to be a software issue. When I cmd+tap anywhere on the trackpad for the first time, it doesn't register, but if I keep holding down cmd and tap more times, every subsequent tap registers as a click.

I'm using MacOS 12.0

MacBook Pro (2020 and later)

So I finally narrowed it down.

  • Safe mode on my account = same behavior
  • New admin account = same behavior

And the problem turns out to be different from simply the first or second click not coming through:

  • If you move the cursor to somewhere, then hold cmd, then tap-to-click => the first, and often second click do not register.
  • If you hold cmd, then move to somewhere, then tap-to-click => it always registers

The way I test this is with links in browsers because cmd+click opens a new tab so it's obvious. I've tested this in both Safari and Chrome to make sure it's not a browser issue. Both behave the same.

It appears that tap-to-click is not coming through as long as you haven't moved the pointer since you pressed down the cmd key. The reason the second or third click usually does work, is because by then you have changed the mouse position ever so slightly by touching the pad to click.

That explains why mostly it's the second click that registers but occasionally it's the third or even fourth (depending on how steady your tap gesture is). If it is mouse movement that the system is waiting for, the described behavior is still completely consistent, as you can expect from a computer system.

So yes I'm still convinced that this is a software issue. But it's a mystery to me why this isn't a problem for a *lot* of users.

UPDATE:

I found a few things updated all near the same time: Big Sur to 11.6.4, MS Office, GrowlyNotes, Safari, an app CorGen3.

So I deleted apps and restarted, no dice. Unplugged it totally then went into SafeReboot. No dice.

Checked System Preferences > keyboard > shortcuts and Preferences > keyboard > modifier keys

"Cmd" is still there like it should be.

My conclusion is that it the OS update. Submitted a bug report.

Yeah, that's why it has to be something in the OS software, because I found out it was HOW it was done. It's not a Logitech issue because I have been doing this off and on for a while, but that was the first time since that particular update (BigSur 11.6.4). And per that article, it's still in Monterrey. Hope that makes sense.

So it could be bluetooth using different things, like maybe a mouse that gets turned on/off or has an auto on/off - see? Maybe the Trackpad has some kind of "connecting language" that's kicking in every time it's used. I'm not a programmer, but I do know they have to program commands into software for i/o when different things are in use and what governs it.

I did submit a secondary solved bug report, hope they don't blow it off and just blame the keyboard, because that's not the issue. Dang, wish I did understand programming, I could be making the bucks!

FYI, Intel Mac, Late 2015.

Hi I'm having the same issue.

I have talked to the geniusbar today but the dude could not find the root cause of it. He said it could be a software issue which I doubt it. In https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252211114, the machine in 2020 has the same issue. It seems can't be the software unless the issue survived the huge OS version change through Monterey. This is either a design defect or production flaw. They have created an esclation for me but I think I'm going to return it. Yes, it's a brand new one. : (

so disappointed...

Still waiting for a fix to. For me as a UI designer I use shift + selecting multiple items a lot. Oc, this is only an issue when working mobile on my Macbook (MB Pro 14” M1 Pro), the purpose of this beast but very annoying and disrupting my workflow. Still have my old 2017 MB Pro and thinking about switching back. It needs to be fixed fast, it is already February!

I agree, tap to click is my preferred click-method. I'm confident this isn't an issue with only some laptops or I would be returning it. I'm hoping for the firmware/software fix, whichever it is. Unfortunately, most people don't use tap to click- which I think is wild. You should be using tap to click and if you don't use it it should feel bad, etc.

I did two things recently: updated to the latest version of Big Sur (11.6.4) and updated my GrowlyNotes app.

Since then the CMD key has gone funky. To get a screenshot I now have to use ALT F4 instead. Googling, looks like not the first time software has messed up the CMD key. I am going to try a few things first to see what helps.

I did check Keyboard > shortcuts and it still has the right thing there, ditto Keyboard > Modifier Keys.

Note: I am on late 2015, Intel iMac

update: In checking my utilities > installation log today I also find that MS Office did an auto reinstall on 2-17, and I did a Safari BenSur 11.6.4 update on 2-23, and an appstore app called CoreGEN3 on 2-24 along with an outside (identified developer) app update a couple days ago on GrowlyNotes.

I have a bluetooth K380 Logitech keyboard, but I still tried several restarts:

  • restart+ctrl+opt
  • restart+opt+P+R
  • restart+shft
  • restart+D
  • restart+cmd+R

I am wondering if the BT keyboard (vs wired) is an issue because I couldn't get into safe mode - but that is using the key that doesn't work.... let me try one more time safe mode with the pc key (alt).

No that didn’t work either. So the above restarts probably didn’t even register either. Bummer. I really dislike that Apple no longer even sells a wired keyboard for situations like this. I am going to report this as a bug re the link on pg one here.

So sad news.

I also just discovered that my trackpad has another problem, still about the "tap to click" function: even without press and hold any modifier key, the right side of the trackpard, close to the edge, does not work at all. I can move the pointer by touching the trackpad in that area, but it is impossible to click using the tap to click.

At this point I think it's a hardware problem
