Using Thunderbolt 4 to USB 3.0 for displays?

I have a USB/Display hub with a USB 3.0 connection, and a USB 3.0 to USB-C mini adapter, which is thunderbolt 3 compatible. When connected, the USB ports on the hub work but the external display does not. Will it work with a thunderbolt 4 to usb 3.0 adapter?

There is no USB-B or USB-A cable that has enough bandwidth to properly support a modern display, and display protocols may not work over USB-A or -B.

If your DVI display is under 1920 wide, use your M1 Pro MacBook Pro built-in HDMI, adapted to DVI to get up to 1920 wide. HDMI to single-link DVI (up to 1920 wide) is a simple re-wire type adapter, and should be rock solid and dirt cheap.

Here is the equipment I have:

  • MacBook Pro (14 inch, 2021) w/ Apple M1 Pro chip
  • Connection Dock - uses a USB-B to USB-A 3.0 to connect to computer. When connected via Adapter (below), USB ports seem to work, but not the current monitor connected via DVI.
  • Monitor - has VGA or DVI outputs
  • Adapter - USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 to USB-A 3.0 - I was trying this to connect the Dock cord to computer
