iCloud and iMessage backup

I haven’t changed anything for my iCloud account for iMessages or iCloud or any settings. I did the last iOS update and now I continue to get an error message stating that my messages in iCloud are not available because my iCloud and iMessage accounts are different. I seriously need ALL of my messages to continue to be backed up and saved due to legal custody reasons. Does this message mean that none of my years worth of messages for evidence are backed up anymore or that I will lose this evidence?! Please help!!

Hello star2420,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with Messages in iCloud. From the alert, it sounds like this cannot be enabled due to different accounts on the device, which means it has not been enabled at all, but this does not mean things are not backing up.

Any messages you have on your device now, are backing up in iCloud, since Messages in iCloud is not enabled. If you have been deleting messages, you would need to do a full system restore to get your back messages. As long as you are not deleting messages, you should be fine.

To check what account is signed in to Messages, check the settings listed here: If you can't turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime - Apple Support

To check what Apple ID is signed in for iCloud, check Settings > [Your name] and check the Apple ID listed under your pic or name: Sign in with your Apple ID - Apple Support

From the info in the alert, these do not match at the moment. In order not to lose your iCloud stuff, you will want to sign in the Apple ID in iCloud, into Messages after you sign that one out. Cheers.
